When to go

Chani's Mediterranean climate means sunny dry summers and mild rainy winters; clear skies are a safe bet from April to October, and wilting heat waves are fairly uncommon.

Getting there

  • Planes

British Airway has a direct service to Chania from the UK, and both Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air operate several daily direct flights from Athens. Alternatively, fly into Heraklion Airport, which is about a two-hour drive from Chania.
  • Boats

Daily ferries pull into Souda port, about seven kilometres from Chania, from Athens' Piraeus port.
  • Taxis

Heading out for dinner? Taxis are difficult to come across from 7pm to 8pm, so be sure to book well in advance. Coming back, you’ll find plenty of taxis around Chania’s main square.
