When to go

Because it’s blessed with year-round sun and a minimal rainy season, there’s not a bad time to visit Palomino. It’s worth bearing in mind that December to March is considered high season, and is also when Colombians pack their bags for the coast.

Getting there

• Planes

  The nearest airport is Santa Marta’s Simón Bolívar International. From there, it’s under two hours by car – hotels should be able to arrange transfers.

• Automobiles

  You won’t need a car to get around town, and tours are available to take you to day-trip locations. The Caribbean coast is one of the safest parts of Colombia, but it’s still probably wise to skip the car rental – and definitely dodge driving at night.
