Visit in March, April, or May for the best chance of (pleasant) sunshine. Please note that San Cristobal sits 2,200 metres above sea level, meaning altitude sickness is a possibility – especially if you’re travelling with little Smiths.

Getting there

  Fly into Tuxtla Gutiérrez Airport and hop in a cab for an hour-and-a-half journey through the Chiapan countryside to San Cristóbal; or you can pick up a rental at the airport and drive yourself up to the region’s hilltop city.

• Automobiles

  Rent a car from Tuxtla airport and experience life as a local behind the wheel; although be aware that automatic cars are tough to find in Chiapas, so leave self-drivers behind and hone your gear-stick skills in advance.
