Spring and summer have the best beach weather, but go in autumn for food festivals and fiery leaves, or in winter if lake skating and cross-country skiing appeal. Oenophiles, worry not, the wineries are open year-round.

Getting there

• Planes

  Toronto Pearson is the nearest international hub, a little over two hours away by car. Alternatively, travel from Ottawa International (a three-hour drive) or Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau (a four-hour drive).

• Automobiles

  The County is two hours from Toronto by car and around three-and-a-half hours from Montreal. You’ll want your own wheels for touring the island – the Loyalist Parkway links all the main towns, but keep a look-out for signs pointing you towards special arts and tasting trails.
