When to go

The British Virgin Islands are at their most popular as an unseasonably sunny Christmas destination – book in the months before to avoid soaring costs and crowds.

Getting there

  • Planes

Tortola has Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, Virgin Gorda has Virgin Gorda Airportand Anegada has Captain Auguste George Airport. The easiest way to reach all three is to stopover in St Thomas on the Dutch arm of the Virgin Islands; there are direct flights from many cities in the US, although those arriving from further away may need to make two stops.
  • Boats

Ferries are the easiest way to get from island to island – from St Thomas you can sail to Tortola or Virgin Gorda (the journey to Tortola is faster). From those there are good links between the other isles.
  • Automobiles

On the larger islands a car might come in handy for testing out the waters on different beaches, cays and bays; on the smaller islands, you may prefer to simply flop and drop. Tortola and Virgin Gorda have car-hire booths, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke have scooter and jeep rental.
