Discover luxury and boutique hotels in Thunder Bay

A tranquil tonic amid the flashy resorts next-door, Thunder Bay is a west-coast hideaway in Barbados that’s as calm as the waves that lap its sugary shores. Take your cue from the sleepy Caribbean waters and spend your days lazing – whether in the sun-warmed sea or on the palm-shaded sand is up to you. Once your tan’s topped up, there’s plenty of local liveliness to dip your toe into: skip to Speightstown for a stroll past Crayola-hued colonial houses, or sip rum to the Bajan beats of Holetown’s beachy bars.

When to go

The months from December to April boast the balmiest beach-ready weather. Rainy season runs from June to November and is worth considering for a quieter break – it’s more a case of short showers peppering sunny days than mood-dampening downpours – but you might want to avoid September and October, when there’s the highest hurricane risk.

Getting there

  • Planes

Fly into Grantley Adams International Airport direct from London Gatwick, Manchester, Frankfurt, Charlotte, Miami, Toronto and several Caribbean cities. Then it’s just 30 kilometres – 40 minutes on the island highways – to the bay.
  • Automobiles

Hire a car at the airport if you plan on exploring nearby towns and beaches. Otherwise, take a taxi from the airport – make sure you check for the yellow sticker on the side of the cab before hopping in.
