Stuben, Austria

The original home to alpine skiing, mountain-surrounded Stuben is a gingerbread village of a ski resort. With only a hundred residents, the charming village draws in a winter crowd of downhill enthusiasts, who have direct access to 88 lifts and cable cars with 305 kilometres of slopes. Pull on your bobble-hat and wander in the snow-boot steps of the Hannes Schneider – the father of modern Alpine skiing – past the 13th-century church and a generous sprinkling of cosy chalets. Ready to hit the slopes? The Albona chairlift, which has direct access to Austria’s largest ski area, Ski Arlberg, is a three-minute walk from the centre of Stuben. Visiting in warmer months? You’ll have more kilometres of hiking trails than you could feasibly wander down (and up and down) in one holiday.
A soaring altitude of 1,409 meters equals snow-based fun from December to April. Prefer warmer pursuits? Summers in the area are made for mountain hikes.
