Into the Blue

At Smith we’re all about exploring the world – and its natural wonders – but we want future generations to be able to enjoy it, too. Our charity of choice, the Blue Marine Foundation (or simply 'Blue'), is working with governments around the world to create marine reserves, encourage sustainable fishing and, ultimately, restore the health of the oceans.

About Blue

Established in 2010 by the team behind groundbreaking documentary The End of the Line, Blue has brought the world's attention to the crisis of over-fishing. Ever since, the foundation has helped protect four million square kilometres of ocean within marine reserves and has established models of sustainable fishing through a portfolio of projects, spanning the globe from the UK to Belize, Greece and the Maldives.

Blue in the Maldives

Blue works with both local and national government – as well as with one of our most treasured and sustainably-led Smith hotels, Six Senses Laamu – to secure resilient reefs for nature and for people. The foundation is working here and across the Maldives to enhance reef resilience and productivity, improve fisheries management and gather local support for conservation. And, in Laamu Atoll, Blue are working to create and implement the Maldives’ first internationally managed marine reserve.
