Treverra Farm Cottage
Once a humble worker's cottage, Treverra Farm Cottage has been lovingly transformed into a very indulgent seaside bolthole. That's not to say that its simple appeal has been obscured by frippery; rather the owner has added layers of sophistication – the art collection, the technically superior kitchen, the infinity pool and Jacuzzi – while preserving the essential seasideyness of the atmosphere. And many of the best things about the cottage, from the views to the piles of children's toys and good reads on the bookshelves, are far from fancy-schmancy.
Where we do like it fancy is in the bathrooms (great showers, especially the huge downstairs one) and in the audiovisual department: this 18th-century restoration is wired for sound, with networked Crestron music system playing CDs, iPod and radio in all the ground-floor rooms. Two separate Sky systems are networked across three TV screens in kitchen, living room and TV snug, which also has a whopping wall-mounted plasma screen with Wii games console. All three bedrooms have iPod docking stations.
Away from the screen and the speaker, the kitchen and dining area are open-plan, making sure time spent here with friends and family is sociable and fun. The decor is refined-rustic, made unique by the owner's collection of vellum books, framed botanical specimens, antique mirrors and apothecary glassware. The English and Scandinavian antiques look perfectly at home in the painterly, light-filled rooms; there's a wood-burning stove in the living room, and a barbecue on the patio, covering both ends of the Cornish weather scale. Treverra Farm Cottage is a snug place to retreat to, a great base for outdoor activities, and lends itself to effortless summer chill-out weekends, with landscaped gardens and pool accessed directly from the kitchen patio – and the sea just there, over the next field.
