NB City

Adelaide, Australia

Best picnic spot

Wander over to the east end of town and roll out a rug in the glorious Adelaide Botanic Gardens on North Terrace (+61 (0)8 8222 9311; www.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au).

Best beaches

Jump on the tram (www.transadelaide.com.au) and rattle down to Glenelg, Adelaide’s number one beach. There are plenty of places to eat and drink here too.

Best walks

On a warm summer night it’s hard to beat a stroll along the Torrens River near the Adelaide Festival Centre – bring a few leftover lunch morsels to feed the swans. If you’re feeling more energetic, there are several tracks up and around Mount Lofty, the highpoint of the Adelaide Hills, including the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens Loop Trail (seven kilometres) and the steep Waterfall Gully Track (eight kilometres return). Contact the Mount Lofty Summit Visitor Centre (+61 (0)8 8370 1054; www.mtloftysummit.com; Mount Lofty Summit Road) for details.

Shopping

Within Adelaide Central Market (+61 (0)8 8231 6683; www.adelaidecentralmarket.com.au; between Grote and Gouger Streets) there’s a Coles supermarket if you need to track down any household items. The market itself is great for fresh fruit and veg, cheeses, coffee, nuts, meat, fish and other local produce.

Activities

The streets of Adelaide are a grid – so are perfect for cycling. Contact Bicycle SA (+61 (0)8 8168 9999; www.bikesa.asn.au) for info on bike trails and hire. If it’s hot, hop on the tram to beachside Glenelg and get out onto the ocean. Temptation Sailing (0412 811 838; www.dolphinboat.com.au) offers a sleek white catamaran which takes you out swimming with dolphins, or just to see the sea. Contact Adventure Blue Glenelg (+61 (0)8 8294 7744; www.adventureblue.com.au) for snorkelling gear hire, scuba courses and kiteboarding lessons.

Smith Tip

The bus stop out the front of NB City is on the Adelaide Connector (www.cityofadelaide.com.au) green route – a free bus service looping around the city via Sturt Street, Hutt Street, Victoria Square and North Adelaide. Hop on and go places.
