Cliff Barns

Norfolk, United Kingdom

Intro

The village is a quiet collection of country walks and public footpaths. Downham Market is 15-20 minutes by car.

Best picnic spot

Old Hunstanton beach is the best place in summer and there is a Cliff Barns beach hut here, included in the booking price.

Best beaches

Old Hunstanton beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area and the location of the Cliff Barns beach hut. There is a beach café nearby. 20 miles west is another fine beach at Holkham. The area is also famous for its seafood, especially Brancaster mussels, and cockles from the Wash.

Best walks

Thetford Forest is 20 miles south east and has lots of lovely graded walks.

Shopping

Supermarket: Downham Market is a 15-minute drive away and has a Tesco on London Road (Monday to Saturday: 8am–10pm; Sunday: 10am–4pm). There is a Waitrose on Castle Acre Road in Swaffham, 20 minutes away (Monday to Saturday: 8.30am–8pm; Sunday: 10am–4pm). Off-licence: Majestic on Dereham Road in Norwich offers free delivery (+44 (0)1603 621 533; www.majestic.co.uk) Deli: There are numerous seafood shops on the coastal road near the beach hut at Old Hunstanton; Picnic Fayre in Cley-next-the-Sea is a particularly good delicatessen. It’s possible to pre-order some local organic produce, but self-catering guests will have to organise their own food.

Activities

All kinds of outdoor pursuits can be organised, including fishing in the nearby trout farm, clay pigeon and game shooting, and canoeing; just ask Cliff Barns to arrange. It’s possible to try go-karting near Swaffham (www.anglia-karting.co.uk). The excellent Links Golf Course is near the beach hut in Hunstanton (www.hunstantongolfclub.com). For a forest full of adventure rope bridges, zip slides and swings, Go Ape! in nearby Thetford Forest (www.goape.co.uk) is good for adults and little ones alike.

Smith Tip

Should you wish to stage your own rodeo at the house, you'll need to know how to ride a bucking bronco. The aim of the professional rodeo rider is to stay on the bronco for a minimum of eight seconds (much easier said than done). The best technique is to lean back, grab the front of the saddle with a vice-like grip and flail madly with your other arm. Don’t forget to wear a Stetson.
