Best picnic spot
Smugly avoid the sunset crowds by settling in for one on your own terrace – pack a hamper, some champagne and enjoy the sublime privilege.
Best beaches
Perivolos and Perissa are two of the most popular beaches on the island, as well as Kamari, which people head for to see the black sand. If you prefer scarlet shades of grain, spread your towel at Red Beach. Rugged Vlichada is also a good spot – there are wild cliffs as your backdrop.
Best walks
Tackle the 235 steps down to the harbour at Ammoudi, where you can reward your efforts with some delicious fresh fish. Slightly further along, descend the 291 steps to Armeni, another peaceful port. Between the two, scale the rough path to Armenaki – a harbour that’s great for serene swimming (there aren’t any shops).
Shopping
There’s a supermarket next to the post office and town hall. There are two fournos (bakeries) a five-minute drive away. You're spoilt for retail choice in Oia; other shops include those selling clothes and handicrafts.
Activities
Call in at the Maritime Museum in Oia (+30 22860 71156) before browsing the many art galleries, boutiques and jewellery shops. Visit the Sigalas winery to stock up on some Greek wine.
