Best picnic spot

Pack your hamper (see 'Shopping') and head off to the banks of the River Aude.

Best beaches

Lac Cavayère, also known as Carcassonne beach, is a short bus ride from the apartments. Alternatively of course you can travel for just an hour to reach the Mediterranean coast

Best walks

If you wish to stay local then the towpath of the Canal du Midi has some beautiful spots whatever the season, however a short journey out of town you'll find numerous vineyards and small towns to pass through picking up some picnic supplies on route.

Shopping

Get your croissants and bread from Boulangerie Noez, fruit and vegetables from the Saturday market filling the square until midday, and cheese, charcuterie and wine from the La Ferme deli.

Activities

Visit the largest and best preserved mediaeval walled town in Europe, the Unesco-stamped La Cité de Carcassonne. For another tick on your World-Heritage checklist, take a boat trip along the Canal du Midi (a two-hour ride is about €10).

Carcassonne itself, where you're staying (it's confusing, but this is the bigger main town – still charming, but not the cobbled mediaeval Cité), is also worth a good wander around for a glimpse at genuine French life without the tourist buzz. The local markets, daily games of boules and various wine and music festivals are always going on behind the scenes. In summer, sample the local vineyards, in winter ski and snowboarding or even husky-dog excursions can be arranged.
