Getting there

Little sister to better known Heron Island, Wilson Island is a tiny tropical paradise 72kms off the coastal Queensland town of Gladstone.

  • Planes The only way to get to Wilson Island is by boat via Heron Island. Fly to Gladstone Airport with QantasLink (www.qantas.com.au; 13 13 13) or Virgin Australia (www.virginaustralia.com; 13 67 89) from Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. Take the connecting courtesy coach to Gladstone Marina from where you can get a boat to Herron Island. the boat departs daily at 11am and takes approximately two hours. From Herron you will need to take another boat to Wilson Island. To assist in maintaining the pristine environment of the surrounding coral cay, there is no jetty at Wilson Island so transfers are made by a small vessel. The trip from Herron to Wilson Island takes about 45 minutes.
  • Others Helicopter transfers from Gladstone to Herron Island are also available with HeliReef (www.helireef.com.au; +61 (0)7 4946 9102) and take 30 minutes. Baggage allowance for helicopter transfers is limited to 15kg per person. However excess luggage can be stored at Gladstone Airport free of charge. From Herron the only way to Wilson Island is by boat.
