Head to the tallest residential building in the UK – the Beetham skyscraper on Deansgate – for a drink on the 24th floor, then drop in at one of the city’s galleries. You can pick from the Lowry at Salford Quays and the Imperial War Museum North. In town, there’s the Manchester City Art Gallery on Mosely Street (+44 (0)161 234 1456) and the Urbis exhibition centre (www.urbis.org.uk). The city has a Selfridges and Harvey Nichols for some serious shopping.
