The trip down Monkey River, and seeing the manatee, was fantastic. But don't forget the mosquito repellant! These mosquitos are completely immune to anything less than 30% and will eat you alive! We happened to stumble across a shop selling 35% Deet and it was fantastic – I would however recommend bringing higher strength with you if you can. If you get the opportunity, stop off at the local gelateria – there are so many different flavours but the coconut is great! We loved it. As for the food, you can't beat the hotel restaurant for quality but if you borrow a bicycle from the hotel and cycle into town, on the left hand side of the main-road, just as it's starting to get busy, there's a small green and white 'shack' type take-out with a picnic bench outside. It sells fried chicken, rice and peas and occasionally fried fish – it's great for a quick snack, or if you're wanting to try some of the local food.
