The Balé

Bali, Indonesia

Local restaurants

Right in front of the resort, Nusa Dua Beach Grill, on Geger Beach, serves fabulous pizzas and salads. For a more traditional meal, Waroeng Kampoeng (+62 (0)361 744 0913), on Jalan Pamelisan Agung, Jimbaran, is a smaller local restaurant offering genuine Balinese and Indonesian dishes. Ironically, the best Balinese food on the island is cooked by a Swiss-born chef who is undoubtedly Bali’s favourite adopted son: Heinz von Holzen’s authentic menu at Bumbu Bali (+62 (0)361 772 299), on Jalan Pratama, Tanjung Benoa, has inspired several cookbooks. The 15-minute drive across the peninsula to Jimbaran Bay is worth it, especially if you track down Bagus Cafe (+62 (0)812 390 7681).

Worth getting out of bed for

Surf’s up all over the Bukit Peninsula, but both novice and serious surfers might like to team up with one of the wave experts at Tropicsurf (www.tropicsurf.net) who’ll take you to the best breaks. Other water action – jet skiing, diving, parasailing and the like – can be found at Tanjung Benoa. Close by at Nusa Dua, swingers (ahem) can also get some action at a series of great golf courses. The Bali Golf and Country Club (www.baligolfandcountryclub.com) is popular.

Diary

February In the last week of February, locals across the island celebrate Saraswati Day to honour the goddess of knowledge. Blessing ceremonies are held to protect books and even computers. March Nyepi celebrations begin with noisy parades of giant papier-mâché monster dolls, called ogoh-ogoh, which are burnt at temples to exorcise evil spirits. From sunrise the next day, the whole island closes down with people staying indoors to trick those same malicious spirits into believing the island is deserted so they’ll leave for another year. June Swimmers, runners and cyclists do their thing along, up and around Jimbaran Bay for the Bali International Triathlon (www.balitriathlon.com).

From the Guestbook…

The Balé was a very nice place to stay, and we were upgraded to a wonderful room. Plus, it’s near the golf.
