Worth getting out of bed for
Less touristy than others in the city is the royal temple Wat Pathum Wanaram. It’s close to the hotel – between Siam Paragon and CentralWorld shopping centre – and worth arriving at early in the morning to make offerings to the monks. Bangkok’s main green space, Lumpini Park, is five minutes from Tenface by taxi – you can walk there when it’s a little cooler. Head there early in the morning to see locals jogging and performing t’ai chi, yoga and even ballroom dancing and karaoke. In the evening, mass aerobics sessions take over several sections of the park. The Suan Lum Night Market, a short walk from the park and open each evening from 6pm till midnight, sells a mix of clothing, jewellery, gifts and food under its covered walkways, and is also a good spot for a drink or dinner.
Local restaurants
Head to the popular Witch’s Oyster Bar (20/10-11 Soi Ruamrudee; +66 (0) 2251 9455) for comfort food and a well-priced wine list. Vietnamese restaurant Delices (20-20/1 Soi Ruamrudee; +66 (0) 2675 3991) appears a little trad but serves tasty, authentic food. Curries & More (63/3 Soi Ruamrudee; +66 (0) 2253 5408-9) is a stylish, mod-Thai eatery where the chef goes easy on the chilli – a blessing for many Western palates. The best spot is in the garden amid the leafy palms and water features.
Local bars
Bacchus (20/6-7 Soi Ruamrudee; +66 (0) 2650 8986) is a sleek, glamorous bar with Italian, French and Japanese influences and more than 400 wines on its list. Just a 10-minute taxi ride from the hotel is Bangkok’s newest rooftop bar, Zense (17th floor, Zen Tower, CentralWorld ; +66 (0) 2100 9898).
Local cafés
Coffee Beans by Dao (20/12-15 Soi Ruamrudee; +66 (0) 2254 7117-9) is a local institution famous for its cakes and high-society clientele.
Nightlife
Bangkok’s most exciting nightlife area, Sukhumvit Soi 11, is 10 minutes away by Skytrain (take the free tuk-tuk shuttle to the station from the hotel) or 15–20 minutes by taxi. Hop your way along the small strip of bars on Sarasin Road, opposite Lumpini Park. The diverse mix includes late-night disco at the 70s Bar and jazz at Brown Sugar. It's at its most fun on weekends and after 9pm.

January–February Chinese New Year is extravagantly celebrated by Bangkok’s Thai-Chinese population and Chinatown is awash with festive colour. March Dozens of Thai designers showcase their creations at Bangkok International Fashion Week. April Traditionally held around 13–15 April, the Thai New Year is rung in with well-wishers throwing water at each other. Don’t wear your Sunday best. May Visakha Bucha Day celebrates the life of Buddha. A major highlight is the candlelit evening procession around Wat Benjamabophit. October The World Film Festival of Bangkok (www.worldfilmbkk.com) brings international and Asian independent movies to town. November Loy Krathong is celebrated with tiny floating candles along all of Bangkok’s major waterways. December The Bangkok Jazz Festival (www.bangkokjazzfestival.com) is one of the biggest in Asia. Thais celebrate the birthday of their monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, on 5 December.
