The Guestbook
We very much enjoyed our stay at South Sands, especially the upgrade to room 8 with its fab sea view. We went for the walking and the eating. It's a few minutes' walk to join the coastal paths and maps and walking suggestions were available at reception, so it was really convenient. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. Would definitely return.

Just back from a 2-night stay at South Sands to celebrate our wedding anniversary. What a lovely place. The initial reception was warm and friendly, and that feeling continued throughout our sta.y A great relaxed environment, young friendly staff and great food. Only one thing; I know they are primarily a fish restaurant, but as a vegetarian there was very little on the menu, just one starter. On asking, they did come up with a good choice of dishes and the food was excellent, just can't understand why they don't 'advertise' it. We took a trip on the ferry from Salcombe to Kingsbridge, which was excellent, more of a boat trip than a ferry, with lots of information about what we were passing, well worth doing and good value for money. All in all a great stay and we will definitely be returning.

Although Salcombe is generally popular in the summer months, I would definitely recommend visiting out of season as we did – the area is wonderfully quiet and made a lovely retreat from pre-Christmas insanity. It's really worth buying one of the walking maps on offer at the hotel reception. The Devon coastal path can be picked up literally five minutes from South Sands, and following this round to Hope Cove will take you on a breathtaking walk round the stunningly barren South Devon clifftops. And to spur you on to the end, there is the Anchor & Hope pub waiting in Outer Hope where they serve delicious homemade lunches and St Austell ales in front of a roaring log fire – rural perfection. And then all you have to do is stumble home along a much less challenging cross-country path! Within Salcombe, the Salcombe Coffee Company is also worth a visit for their wickedly strong Bailey's hot chocolates, and the Victoria Pub for more pints of local ale by the open fire.

Trust the Sat Nav, even when you're driving down lanes with grass growing in the middle – the wait is worth it! Lovely bar area, very relaxed and staff superb. Have recommended South Sands to four people already. We'll be back.

I hadn't realised what a beautiful spot Salcombe is. South Sands Hotel is a wonderful place to stay. We went with our 2 month old baby needing a kitchen. Beach Suite 3 was perfect. They even provided a cot. The restaurant with outside deck is right on the beach itself. At high tide (morning and evening in Sept) the sea comes right up to the deck giving the impression of being on a boat. The food was impeccable. Every meal was amazing. Event the scrambled eggs at breakfast were done to perfection! There is a little ferry which runs into Salcombe town centre (harbour) every 30 mins which is useful. However we walked back and it's a nice walk (even with a pram). Watch out for the steep (up)hill from North Sands to South Sands. Also bear in mind that Salcombe itself is very narrow and a little awkward with a pram. A baby harness is a easier option and good advice. I highly recommend this hotel and area for a holiday, for couples and families.
