Worth getting out of bed for
You can stroll straight out of the hotel and up onto the hills, to walk along a coastline renowned for its natural beauty. Next door, South Sands Sailing (+44 (0)1548 843 451, at www.southsandssailing.co.uk ) will let you try out your maritime skills with dinghies, kayaks and catamarans in anything from two-hour taster sessions to four-day courses. Overbecks Museum and Garden (+44 (0)1548 842 893, at Sharpitor, Salcombe, www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-overbecks) is National Trust residence that once belonged to Edwardian inventor, Otto Overbeck. It houses a weird and wonderful collection of inventions and oddities, but the real draw is the exotic (and extensive) garden.
Local restaurants
The Winking Prawn at North Sands (+44 (0)1548842; www.winkingprawn.co.uk) is a somewhat eccentrically named beach-side brasserie, that offers barbecues in the summer. For fine dining, try fish restaurant The Seahorse (+44 (0)1803 835147; www.seahorserestaurant.co.uk), on the banks of the River Dart. The Sloop in Bantham (+44 (0)1548 560489; thesloop.co.uk) is a traditional British gastropub, and makes a great rambler’s rest-stop, about two-and a half hours away (or a 20-minute drive if you don’t fancy the walk).
Local bars
For a sunset drink, head to Island Street Bar and Grill (+44(0)1548 844007; www.islandstreet.co.uk) at Hannafords Landing for classic cocktails with a Salcombe twist – a ‘Sex on Sunny Cove’, anyone?

From the Guestbook…
We very much enjoyed our stay at South Sands, especially the upgrade to room 8 with its fab sea view. We went for the walking and the eating. It's a few minutes' walk to join...
