South Sands

Devon, United Kingdom

Style Nautical beach retreat

Setting Secluded Salcombe cove

The nautical beiges, whites and blues that make up South Sands' design palette perfectly suit the location: a picturesque beach cove. The hotel’s relaxed, friendly atmosphere and proximity to the beach make it ideal for kid-toting weekenders. With a sailing school a pebble’s throw from your room, you can take to the sea on a whim.

Food and drink at South Sands

  • Hotel restaurant

The restaurant and adjoining terrace are two of the hotel’s best assets: the curved, floor-to-ceiling windows mean that there are bay views from every table. Mitch Tonks, award-winning food writer, restaurateur and fishmonger, has devised the restaurant’s modern Mediterranean menu. In the evenings, the focus is on the locally sourced, organic produce and fresh fish, whereas the lunch menu is more relaxed, with burgers, sandwiches and the like. Be sure to book advance in summer.

  • Dress code

Casual but groomed. Anything with a nautical twist is guaranteed to be a hit.
  • Top table

If there’s a gang of you, the booth seats in the corners create a more intimate setting for a get-together, but the main priority should be to get a table nearest the window.
  • Last orders

Be as leisurely as you like about lunch – it’s served until 4pm. Dinner is available until 9.30pm, and the bar is open until 11pm.
  • Room service

The full restaurant menu is available during restaurant hours, and the kitchen can provide light snacks 24 hours a day.
  • Hotel bar

The small, informal cocktail bar has a warm, woody feel, with an eye-catching bar front set with blocks of oak. There’s a different aperitif on the menu every night, but our favourite is the South Sands Cooler – a striking blue drink made out of Southern Comfort, curaçao, elderflower cordial and soda.

In the know

Our favourite rooms

At South Sands, it’s all about the sea views. Beach Suite 3 boasts the best vista, and, as with all the Beach Suites, has a sitting room, dining area, kitchen, balcony, and two double rooms. The J-Class room is the honeymoon suite, and has an eight-foot bed with a wooden frame, adorned with a mixture of pale and royal blue cushions, and a pair of freestanding, roll-top, twin tubs. As befits its status, it also has a spectacular view of the waves.

Packing tips

Bring a wetsuit if you plan to try the sailing school next-door. If you’re not the sort of person that would just have one hanging in the back of the wardrobe, you can always rent one.

Also

Take cream tea out on the terrace, and engage in the perennial cream-before-jam vs jam-before-cream debate.

From the Guestbook…

We very much enjoyed our stay at South Sands, especially the upgrade to room 8 with its fab sea view. We went for the walking and the eating.  It's a few minutes' walk to join...
