In the know

Our favourite rooms

Big glass windows with views out to the marina, king-size beds and up-to-the-minute hi-tech treats such as flatscreen TVs, digital audio and podcasts give Ohtel's bedrooms an edgy, urban feel. Bathrooms up the luxe factor, with sexily sized two-person baths, large showers, underfloor heating and marble floors (suites include body jets in showers), as well as local Kiwi toiletries and vibrant textiles. We love the mid-20th-century vintage design classics scattered throughout, with furniture, ceramics and clocks drawn from the 1950s and 1960s for a quirky retro vibe. Personally collected by the owner, they span cult Scandinavian and international names, including pieces by Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Borge Mogensen, Finn Juhl, Hans J Wegner, Nanna Ditzel, Vladimir Kagan and G-Plan, as well as cult Australasian labels such as Parker Furniture, chairs by Grant Featherston and ceramics by Crown Lynn. Suites 6 (fresh green decor) and 9 (rich brown) are larger with generous size beds, fab freestanding baths and front-facing balconies with great views over Wellington's cityscape, including Waitangi Park, the inner harbour and CBD. If you prefer a corner bath, ask for one of the rooms at the back of the hotel.

Packing tips

Binoculars for looking out to sea. Views from bedrooms include Chaffers Marina, Waitangi Park, the harbour and CBD, and look especially magical at night.
