Getting there
Matangi Island is one of three small isles off larger Taveuni Island in north-east Fiji, overlooking neighbour Qamea Island.
- Planes Fly into Fiji's Nadi International Airport (www.airportsfiji.com), on the west coast of main island Viti Levu. Fijian national carrier Air Pacific (www.airpacific.com), which code shares with Qantas (www.qantas.com), offers direct flights to Nadi (pronounced 'Nandi') from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland, Christchurch, Hong Kong, Honolulu and Los Angeles, as well as connections via Los Angeles from Vancouver. Other international carriers flying into Nadi include Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Pacific Blue, Korean Air, Continental Airlines, Air Vanuatu and Air Caledonia. From Nadi, it's about a 90-minute internal flight with regional airline Pacific Sun (www.airpacific.com) to Matei Airport on Taveuni Island, the jumping-off point for Matangi. If you're coming from capital Suva, the flight takes about 60 minutes. Planes can be small and a little hair-raising for the flight-phobic when conditions are bumpy.
- Trains There are no trains services in Fiji's archipelago.
- Automobiles There is a compulsory charge of AU$130 a person plus tax for return minibus and boat transfers between Matei Airport, on Taveuni Island's north coast, and Matangi Island. The scenic eight-mile drive to the boat landing takes about 20 minutes, followed by 20 minutes for the sea crossing. Be prepared to wade to and from the resort's small boat – we recommend wearing flip-flops or sandals which you can take on and off easily, and shorts or a skirt to avoid getting trousers wet. You won't be able to drive on the rustic 240-acre island.
