Sample Hérépian’s celebrated black turnips at L’Ocre Rouge (+33 (0)4 67 95 06 93; www.locrerouge.fr). It’s one of the region’s best eateries and is particularly recommended for its wine-matching prowess. L’Auberge de l’Abbaye in Villemagne serves fresh regional cuisine for around €50 a head, wine included (+33 (0)4 67 95 34 84). There are just two choices for each course on the menu at L’Atelier at 22 rue les Puits in Bédarieux, where limited variety is amply compensated for by culinary invention (+33 (0)4 67 23 86 02). Named after the stone-walled building’s former incarnation, La Forge in Bédarieux, at 22 avenue Abbé-Tarroux, serves very good fish and game dishes, with menus starting at €15 (+33 (0)4 67 95 13 13).
Worth getting out of bed for
The village of Lamalou-les-Bains is a short drive from the hotel, and offers both a nine-hole golf course with gorgeous views (+33 (0)4 67 95 08 47), and mineral springs where you can indulge in thermal treatments and therapies.
