The Guestbook

If it hadn't been such beautiful weather on the days we stayed at Fronlas, I would have happily suggested that we spend them milling about our light and airy room watching TV and eating Heavenly chocolates in our waffle robes – indeed, despite the good weather the temptation almost got the better of me. We stayed in Dau (the Mr & Mrs Smith favourite) which, to be frank, left me with deep unadultered bedroom envy.

We took a walk around the town on the afternoon that we arrived and found the Cawdor Hotel which looked nice and decided to eat there for dinner – great service and delicious food, but we were advised that we were lucky to be seated as we hadn't booked. (Wednesdays and Sundays are their busiest evenings.) We stopped in for a drink at The Sal which I think could get more lively during the evenings if the Jaegermeister fridge was any indication. We spent an entire day ambling over the grounds of Dynefwr Castle and Park which is within walking distance from Fronlas and well worth the small National Trust contribution. A walk to the top of Penlan Park for the view is well worth the effort, even on tired legs – we went up at 6pm and were disturbed only momentarily by a small and very happy dog. A great picnic spot too.

We dined that night at the Angel Inn which I think turned out to be our favourite – lovely landlady and friendly staff. One thing that struck me most about Llandeilo is how unashamedly foodie the entire town is – more yummy delicatessans than you can shake a stick at and lots of menus that offer gluten or dairy-free options. It's a great town with great people who have great ideas – it should be mentioned on everyone's must-visit list.

Not a long journey from Swansea to Llandeilo and work commitments meant only time for one night away - but well worth the visit - a complete change of scenery and pace. Fronlas was new to us and lived up to the Mr & Mrs Smith review - our room was stylish yet comfortable with wonderful views. We dined at The Cawdor Arms (+44 (0)1558 823500) on Rhosmaen Street - good food and even better service. After an excellent breakfast at Fronlas we spent a leisurely morning shopping - would particularly recommend Scorpio (+44 (0)1558 824462) at 9 King Street for homeware and gifts (loved the Melin Tregwynt range) and Peppercorn (+44 (0)1558 822410) at 5 King Street, which stocks anything you might need for the kitchen. There's a good range of pubs and restaurants in the area - try Y Polyn in Capel Dewi - about quarter of an hour drive away - wonderful lunch.
