What I liked
A delightful hotel. We were given a complimentary upgrade to a deluxe room and had fabulous views of the estuary and the sea. Staff all seem young and were very helpful, there when you want them and vice versa. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The extensive space and facilities mean that children can be children without interfering with those who no longer have to worry about how to occupy and entertain them. Lovely outdoor hot tub with great views. All in all, a very sympathetic environment.
Restaurant is extremely good value for money. We had made a decision to eat there on all four nights and as the food was great on the first evening, there was some suspense as to whether it would be as good as our stay progressed… we were not disappointed. Only thing that was suspect was being charged £11 for a glass of rose (and a local Cornish brew at that!) Overall, the combination of sympathy, suspense and a bit of suspicion could have been straight out of Daphne du Maurier (lots of gulls around as well – but flying rather than just sitting).

What I liked
Fowey Hall is something that we would never experience in Australia. This majestic castle is still in its original glory – well worth the two-night stay. We unwound and relaxed within the comfort of different sitting rooms, where we could enjoy either a pot of tea or a glass of wine. Fowley Hall certainly makes everyone feel welcome – regardless of whether you’re travelling with children or not. Breakfast was delightful and there was plenty of it to make sure that you got the proper start to your day. If you want to experience how the rich and famous once lived, look no further – Fowey Hall is the place for you.
What could be better
Our greeting was not quite as we had expected. The girl at reception told us straight away that there was no booking for us. Upon showing her our paperwork, she apologised for her mistake and was very helpful from that point onwards. Food at dinner was average. We had just come from the Bull Inn, so we expected the quality of food to be even better – considering the quality of Fowey Hall’s accommodation. Should the food improve, I would give it a 10 out of 10.

What I liked
A great hotel for families, with good spa facilities; good Cornish fare (for a price).
What could be better
Not really a place for couples to relax, unless they're very keen on having children running everywhere.
Local recommendations
Sam's restaurant in Fowey was a real winner – great rock memorabilia, wonderful food, excellent cocktails and wonderful value (+44 (0)1726 832273); the Galleon Inn on the harbour also had great food and drink, but pack your walking boots for the regular trip down and back up the hill to Fowey – the steep hill is slippery after rain (+44 (0)1726 833014).

Remember to pack your trainers or some sort of walking shoe. The walk down to Fowey is quite steep. Crabbing is an essential past time in Fowey and you can buy crabbing lines at the Aquarium in Fowey.

A lovely building which goes under renovation as of June 2012. This didn’t impact too much as new public rooms were made available whilst others were closed for repainting. The staff were very attentive, friendly and helpful and the food in the hotel was really excellent. Lots of children staying but they were well-behaved and not noisy. I would recommend any potential guests to pay extra and insist on a refurbished bedroom. I had taken the description 'luxury hotel' at face value and expected a 'standard' room to be luxurious but perhaps less spacious. We got an unrefurbished room at the back over the kitchens and it was quite shabby. I am very disappointed that this was not made clear to us when we booked.

Here's a useful tip if you're travelling with a baby - ask for a deluxe double in the Garden Wing as these are much bigger than the ones in the main building. Loads of room for baby to crawl around and explore without getting into too much trouble. Initially, we got put in a very nice double above reception but found it just too impractical for a ten-month-old.

We were very happy with our stay at Fowey Hall. The hotel was very well laid out with plenty of well-kept garden for the kids to run around. The pool and trampoline were the favourite activities for them and the grown-ups. Dinner was great, set up so the kids could eat with you and then wander off to the playroom while we ate ours. The staff were also friendly and helpful. The hot tub looked a bit unloved with no proper cover on it, just a bit of ply board, and in the shade from lunchtime onwards. The village itself made you feel as though you had left England, in a good way. Make sure you book restaurants in advance, as they get busy.

A short walk from Fowey Hall in a downhill direction is the stunning and quiet Readymoney Cove (lovely in the early morning). The holiday home of Daphne Du Maurier is there and it is a perfect spot to get the sea air. Also there is a crab pool and the most stunning view of Polruan and the town of Fowey. A highly recommended detour from Fowey.

The Fowey to Polruan Ferry was a highlight of our wonderful stay in this Cornish idyll. If you don't have seafaring legs don't worry, it is more a leisurely boat trip than a cross channel experience and well worth it as the views are amazing.

While meandering through the quaint little town of Fowey we stumbled upon a fabulous little deli/restaurant called Tiffins. Very tastefully decorated serving wonderful cakes and local snacks downstairs while the restaurant upstairs open day and night serves delicious food in an inviting environment. The moules dishes are particularly heartwarming on a chilly day.

We ate in the town Saturday night at The Toll Bar (1 Lostwithiel Street) – a real surprise. The restaurant opens out at the back of the bar. The food was delicious and satisfying – we both opted for fish dishes – well presented and served by friendly staff. Our three-course meal with a bottle of wine and coffee was in the region of £80 for two and worth every penny. On Sunday we ate at Food for Thought on the quay: the asparagus starter was crunchy-beautiful and the locally sourced crab cakes very tasty. We both went for the roast pork which was an amazing joint of meat cooked to perfection and full of flavour – the crackling couldn't be faulted. Both these restaurants were in our opinion superior to Hansons restaurant at Fowey Hall where we ate Friday night.
The staff at Fowey Hall hotel were excellent; however, for us, two negative comments would be the lack of tea/coffee making facilities in the room, and the advance allocation of breakfast tables.
