What I liked
It's very peaceful and the property is very tastefully decorated. Service was very nice: just enough so you still got your space.
What could be better
The food at the villa was just average.
Local recommendations
Osteria della Lodola, less than 10 minutes drive from Fontelunga.

What I liked
The relaxing environment and the location with easy access to all the hill towns. We'd have happily relaxed by the pool for the entire visit but a few cloudy and cool days sent us out on the tourist trail to the hill towns, which we are glad we didn't miss. They are lovely.
What could be better
Would probably suggest they don't charge for CD and DVD rental from the library, other hotels don't. We didn't want to but the fact they charged seemed odd.
Local recommendations
We used the hotel's recommendations every time and they all turned out very well. Our evening meals were in; Cortona- Osteria Del Teatro (very good especially the ricotta in courgette flower starter- but the most expensive one); Lucignano- Il Goccino, had a lovely set menu (free prosecco and amuse bouche too) and two local ones; Osteria della Lodola (good set menu but had a bit of a hobson's choice since one was tripe and I wasn't up for that). The last restaurant I think was called la Vecchia Rota, by which time we had eaten so much we probably didn't appreciate it enough. Two lunch restaurants were Osteria Acquacheta in Montepulciano (my favourite, try sharing a huge t-bone steak between two, both food and wine is very reasonable) and Antica Osteria L'Agania in Arezzo (very good too).

What I liked
We loved the personal service; the pre-arrival email, the welcome drink, the suggested day trips and great restaurant recommendations. The location is a great base for touring the local area to visit vineyards and picturesque hilltop villages but also just as good for lazy days around the pool. Oh and the food - amazing pasta and more cooked by their local chef - we had lunch and two dinners at the villa and the food was superb every time. The hosted dinner party was a great evening and we all applauded the chef when she came out to say goodnight.
What could be better
I've been thinking about this one for ages and I honestly can't think of a single thing.
Local recommendations
Avignoniesi has a great tour of the vineyard followed by lunch and wine tasting. It's worth paying extra for the premium tasting. Pizza and Calzone from the pizzeria in Pozzo was great and it was typical of their laid-back style that the villa said it was okay to pick up a takeaway and have it back at the villa. It's worth going up to the nunnery at the top of Cortona for fantastic views across the valley. The walk up is steep but beautiful. For those less mobile or lazy, there is a road that goes up there around the side of the town.

Our stay at Fontelunga was one of the highlights of our five-week trip through Italy and Greece. It is a truly special place where you are made to feel welcome as soon as you walk through the gate. The property itself is beautiful and the hosts and all of the staff are absolutely wonderful. Meals at Fontelunga are fabulous – all made with fresh local produce, and the Tuscan wines are of course excellent. Hire a car so you can see lots of places like Lucignano, Cortona and Montepulciano. All very beautiful. Staff at Fontelunga can make reservations for local restaurants for you. We tried Il Goccino and La Lodola – both were excellent. We only stayed three nights but wished it could have been longer. A week would have been great and we hope to return. We can't sing Fontelunga's praises loud enough. We would have no hesitation in recommending it to everyone.

Phillip and Paulo are truly wonderful hosts who put loving care and attention into every detail of your stay. Our room had wonderful views of the gardens and Tuscany beyond. We chose to have dinner at the Villa on both nights and enjoyed delicious gourmet meals. Of course I had to have second helpings so I could share them with the sweet puppies, Charlie, Lola and Lucy. Fontelunga is such a delightful place, I can't say enough about how much I loved just being there. It was so refreshing to be hosted in a way that was wonderfully luxurious yet not uncomfortably overdone. We caught ourselves feeling as though we were with old friends, which from what I can see most guests to this wonderful location quickly become. Can’t wait to return.

A wonderful hotel, with exceptional hosts, plus Lola, Lucy Liu and Charlie. The room was lovely, with a large bathroom and fantastic views, and I very much enjoyed the dinner parties that Paolo and Philip held for guests. The hotel is situated in a beautiful part of the world and I can't wait to return.

Villa Fontelunga is a home from home and a little bit of paradise all in one.
Our top tip would be to leave the guide book at home. They have everything you could need in a really well prepared folder, it covers all possible options including exploring local villages, longer day trips, wine tastings, shopping, bike riding, fine dining and the best of the local pizzerias - all with photocopies that you can take out to with you. A million times better than any lonely planet guide and all lovingly researched by the owners. Its also worth mentioning that they include excellent directions to help you navigate the winding roads of Tuscany.

Villa Fontelunga was everything we expected of our fabulous Toscana holiday. Paolo and his team offered exceptional service and went over and above any requests. With so many local towns to explore, make sure you stay for at least seven days so that you can simply laze by the pool for a day or two. For the femme fatales, don't miss the Prada outlet just 30 minutes drive from the Villa. We had the most wonderful time at Fontelunga, and we'll definitely go back reminiscing on becoming engaged under the Tuscan stars.

If you are lucky enough to be staying at Villa Fontelunga, you must reserve a table at La Stechetto (about 10 mins' drive from the villa). This restaurant has bags of character and is only open four days a week. The restaurant is decorated with trinkets galore and you will be in awe of the fabulous decor.
Giancarlo and his family give you an amazing welcome (apparently he loves London and the queen), so you are immediately made at home, and the food will not disappoint – the best crostini in all of Tuscany!
