Even in high summer, it’s easy to get into the festive spirit at snug sanctuary DV Boutique Hotel. This cosy cabin sits close to the slopes in mountainous Madonna di Campiglio, a resort for seasoned skiers as well as beginners. From the outside, the timber structure is a classic chalet vision, but with a turreted twist.

Reclaimed wood lines the floors, walls and ceilings, with animal hides laid out here and there. The pine-covered restaurant will cater to the heartiest mountain appetite, with interesting dishes rolled out by the daring chef (he’s currently trialling alpine-fresh trout sashimi). Past the lobby, there’s an inviting lounge with a squashy sofa, patterned rug and wood-burning fire. There’s even a cigar room, for smoking that’s sheltered from the snow.
