C/O The Maidstone

Hamptons, United States

Style Whimsical Scandinavian chic

Setting East Hampton hideaway

Serene as the swans that grace East Hampton’s town pond, the stately white clapboard exterior of c/o The Maidstone conceals a history that is anything but unruffled. Renovated with tact and warmth, Swedish-style, to showcase a smörgåsbord of Scandinavian design influences, this eco-friendly boutique hotel has a future as bright as its Svenskt Tenn florals.

Food and drink at C/O The Maidstone

  • Hotel restaurant Dine in a doll’s house in the intimate setting of the Living Room restaurant, where gleaming gold and white candlesticks and candelabras set off seating richly upholstered in Svenskt Tenn florals. Chef James Carpenter’s ‘slow food’ philosophy results in a synergy of Scandinavian cuisine with the freshest and most seasonal of local organic ingredients; watch out for his signature dish of tarte flambé with house-cured Norwegian smoked salmon, crème fraiche and capers, and the Living Room charcuterie plate, which pairs Iowan ham and duck salami from the Hudson Valley with Sweden’s piquant Praest Ost cheese. And Smiths with a sweet tooth need go no further than pastry chef Laura Donnelly's sheep ricotta and pumpkin cheesecake with gingersnap crust.
  • Dress code Indulge the fanciful spirit of the Astrid Lindgren Room with perky Pippi Longstocking pigtails. Sashay (or swagger) to your table in your quirkiest vintage outfit, and see which Smith clashes most with the upholstery.
  • Top table In this cosy space, any table à deux will feel as intimate as they come. For the ultimate indulgence, however, stay in your bathrobe and sup on Carpenter’s seared Atlantic salmon and löjrom caviar in the comfort of your own suite.
  • Last orders Dinner is served until 11pm in the Living Room, but a late menu is available at the bar if you’re feeling peckish after dinner hours.
  • Room service The Living Room menu is available via room service between 8am and 11pm.
  • Hotel bar Navigate one of East Hampton’s largest wine cellars with the help of the hotel’s dedicated full-time sommelier, then relax with an organic Oregonian or local Long Island vintage in the cosy Living Room Lounge. Or follow the pared-down, laid-back harmonies of Scandinavian jazz to the hotel bar, and sip on vodka, lime juice and lingonberry in c/o the Maidstone’s signature ‘Stockholmapolitan’ (just one choice from a fiendishly innovative Swedish cocktail list).

In the know

Our favourite rooms

We love the Maidstone’s sovereign take on ‘his ’n’ hers’ in the adjoining His Majesty’s Suite and Her Royal Highness’ Suite, which pay homage to Swedish magnificos King Carl XIV and Queen Silvia with matching fleur-de-lys wallpaper and deep claw-foot bath tubs in gold and silver. For decadent winter afternoons spent shivering deliciously over Skaldic verse, try the Edvard Munch Room; all wingbacks and old-gold walls, its bathroom outfitted in gleaming black Swedish slate.

Packing tips

Bring preppy red Ralph Lauren loafers for free-wheeling around the Hamptons on a matching scarlet vintage bicycle; in colder months, curl up on a sheepskin-covered window seat with cashmere sweaters and a good book.

Also

Each room comes with a much-coveted beach parking permit as well as beach towels, umbrellas and loungers; hunker down for the day on the white sands of East Hampton beach with a picnic basket packed full of organic delicacies by the hotel. Cycle the mile-long journey on one of the red Kronan bikes available to borrow. Have a yoga class in the meditation gardens. Pets get their own special menu, with treats such as Hot Diggity Dog (a beef hot-dog) and Rover Easy (scrambled eggs).
