Quirky hotel in a great location for exploring the city, just off Union Square. Be sure to check out the hotel bar. Despite being very popular with hotel guests and 'walk-ins' alike, the hotel do a great job of keeping the hubbub unnoticed to those staying. Top tip: make the trip up the Westin St Francis Hotel's glass elevators for some great free views over the city. They're a little tucked away in the hotel lobby though. Just don't try and get off at the top floor and have a look around, they're private residences.

We had some of the best dim sum we have ever eaten at Yank Sing. The chilli sauce was so good that we bought some to bring home.

There are probably better hotels - it's lovely looking but very noisy between rooms (4am bathtime next door!!) but eat at Perbacco in San Francisco. Fantastic Italian food - and we eat in Italy!!

For excellent Vietnamese food, with stunning views over the bay, try The Slanted Door in the Ferry Building (+1 415 861 8032). We stopped for a long lunch after the obligatory Alcatraz tour as the restaurant is only a short walk away from Pier 39.
