Brody House

Budapest, Hungary

Style Boho B&B boudoirs

Setting Pest-side palace quarter

More than just a boutique bolthole, Brody House is also a members’ club with a stylish bar, a sometime film and fashion-shoot set, and a hub of local creativity with a calendar crammed full of art events and book readings. The rooms (each named after the artist whose work hangs on its walls) are mini galleries, and the communal spaces have high ceilings, lots of natural light and original parquet floors; yet somehow the townhouse still has the air of a (very cool) private home.

Food and drink at Brody House

  • Hotel restaurant

None. An in-house chef can prepare simple meals for guests during the day. Choices vary – there’s no menu, but generally seasonal Hungarian specialities are on offer, such as beef stew with noodles, and there’s sometimes English afternoon tea (one of the owners is an Englishman).

  • Dress code Anything goes: creativity rules, not glamour. If you fancy becoming a walking part of the hotel’s ever-changing art exhibition, pick up a limited-edition silkscreen-printed t-shirt from nearby studio and gallery Printa.
  • Top table In summer, the enchanting central courtyard is a pleasingly quiet place in which to snack. (It’s also a ideal for a secluded alfresco drink, unlike Budapest’s fun but often crowded kertek, the outdoor garden bars.)
  • Last orders The Continental breakfast buffet is served 7.30am–11am; the chef provides lunch 12 noon to 4pm; dinner is available by prior arrangement 7pm–11pm. Drinks are poured in the Brody House Bar until the last guest retires.
  • Room service Room service is available 8am–8pm; everything the chef’s cooking that day can be delivered to you in your room.
  • Hotel bar

More like the well-stocked bar you might find in the home of your most stylish friends than a public bar, the Brody House Bar is open from 8am to 8pm. Try one of the signature cocktails, such as the Bathory Mary. There’s also an honour bar, where you can mix your own drinks.

In the know

Our favourite rooms

Because each room is decorated in such an individual style, it’s almost impossible to choose a favourite, but perhaps the most romantic choice for a couple is the Tinei room, with its glamorous freestanding golden bath and works by Moldovan artist (and Budapest resident) Alexander Tinei. The largest space is the two-bedroom Yusuke Apartment, which has its own lounge and fully equipped kitchen.

Packing tips

Your camera, sketch book or art materials of choice. From the works on the walls to the recycled, reclaimed, rebuilt and reprinted furniture and decor throughout – and the palaces beyond your townhouse walls – there’s plenty here to inspire you.

Also

Guests are given access to the Brody House members’ club events, including its regular cultural evenings. Previous events include an ‘art tasting dinner’ with glass sculptors Maria Bohus and Zoltan Lugosi, a classical concert by Hungarian soprano Emese Vari-Kovacs and a ‘creative discussion about Rupert Murdoch’. And, ask staff for recommendations on the coolest of local gigs – they’ve got their own record label, Brody House Sounds.
