  • Dress code English eccentric: petticoats and pashminas; pastels and pocket watches.
  • Top table Nab a window table and let the garden inspire botany-themed games of ‘I spy’.

  • Room service None, so eat a hearty breakfast. Sugar-fiends will appreciate the little stash of sweets left in rooms.
  • Hotel bar

There's no bar, but you're only a short stroll from the city centre and its many drinking dens.

Our favourite rooms

Light and airy Room One has two sash windows, a pale blue-and-taupe complexion, a bed scattered with gingham cushions, and a wooden-floored bathroom with a rain-head shower. Packing tips

Cashmere bed-socks for padding around in; a copy of Persuasion by Jane Austen; comfy shoes for long walks by the canal and/or cycling gear (borrow wheels from Bath Bike Hire: www.bathbikehire.com).
