Food and drink at Bawa House 87

  • Hotel restaurant

Whether you’re sitting in-suite, atop the lake-view terrace or on the veranda of the restaurant in the restored Shophouse, the chef’s home-cooked dishes come to you, where and when you like. Thai flavours and spanking-fresh grilled seafood pepper the menu, along with top-notch Sri Lankan spreads of exotic breakfasts and creative curries.

  • Dress code Light and breezy linen or cool cotton threads.
  • Top table Tables can be set up anywhere you fancy, but for a seriously seductive setting, opt for a spot on the lake’s island, beneath the boughs of a banyan tree.
  • Last orders The cut-off time for dinner is usually 11pm, but as you're encouraged to treat this as your home, it’s all very flexible.
  • Room service Order snacks and meals from the restaurant menu from 7am to midnight. Drinks are available around the clock.
  • Hotel bar

The veranda of the artifact-laden Artist’s Bar is the primo position for sipping, but it's worth noting that the hotel only stocks local beer and wine, so if you're after something with more of a kick, BYO liquor or ask the hotel to stock up for you. If you manage to get your hands on a bottle of feisty local spirit arrack, ask the barman to whip you up his signature arrack sour.

In the know

Our favourite rooms

Each sigh-inducing suite is a fairytale set-up of net-swathed king-size beds, antique doorways leading into ensuite bathrooms, and private dining rooms that call for memorable moments à deux. French windows frame garden vistas and striking artworks enliven the whitewashed walls. Of the two, we love the Lake Suite’s far-reaching views.

Packing tips

Paints for artfully recording the scene, binoculars for spying on the resident wildlife and a picnic rug for lazy afternoons on the lawn.
