This is a great winter hotel, made even better by the staff who are welcoming and professional.  Farnborough does not feature on my list of places to visit, but the Aviator has such a calming effect that we've been now several times. We haven't actually been out and about in Farnborough but we did go to Cobham, which was rather good. It has good coffee shops, good shops and is very easy to park in. One comment I would make about the Aviator is to check beforehand whether there is a function on.  It is not noisy but you can hear a beat.  We did mention it to the staff who were extremely accommodating.

Really lovely hotel. Very impressed with the suite and would return again.

Brilliant service from the reception staff onwards.

Our first visit in over a year and yet Aviator still seems to capture the wow factor. We were warmly welcomed by a range of staff, having visited several times last year. With an amazing selection of films to choose from, delectable food (the breakfast here is second to none) and a free mini bar, we simply indulged and locked ourselves away. Quite frankly this is the perfect place to take refuge, and less than an hour from London. For those of you with a bit more energy than us, Farnham is definitely worth a visit, as is its Art Gallery with its excellent reviews in Time Out.

Whilst Aviator's brilliant and close to some stunning scenery, if Mother Nature intervenes and renders this unavailable, there's not really much to do in Farnborough by way of back up. Step into Guildford, 20 mins in the car from Farnborough and loaded to the brim with shops. Mrs Smith happily whiled away the day in retail therapy bliss with me in tow. The Percy Arms in charming Chilworth, just outside Guildford, proved to be a welcome and hearty feeding and watering stop.

What a great hotel. Was somewhat sceptical about staying there but it was close to where we needed to be so booked in anyway. So when we checked in, we were very pleasantly surprised. Brasserie on the ground floor and I had an amazing steak. Watching planes take off and land was very cool – somewhat jealous but 100 per cent must get an airside room. Tip: for more aeronautical stuff there's a museum just up the road that has a few retro British jets in the garden worthwhile for a look around.

Just 10 minutes from the hotel is a lovely little town, Farnham, where we discovered a gem of a pub, the Nelsons Arms. The roast beef was delicious, as was the chicken and leek pie – all very reasonably priced and surprisingly good. A short walk away is Farnham castle, where you can stroll around the impressive remains and enjoy beautiful views. A perfect end to a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Another great stay at the Aviator, really can’t fault the hotel. We had a rather lovely lunch at The New Mill restaurant, a short drive away from Farnborough in the village of Eversley. Masterchef-style dining at pub prices made for a pleasant gastronomic surprise. Quick tip: follow the road signs to the restaurant, rather than the Sat Nav, else you’ll end up driving through what’s billed as a ford but is in anyone else’s language a river!

I should have been writing about the Three Sisters in Tallinn but due to the incompetence of a certain budget airline, our flight was cancelled (when we were at the gate, might I add!) and all hopes of a romantic weekend away were slowly slipping away. Three cheers then to Mr & Mrs Smith's wonderful Sabrina who came to the rescue. A couple of phone calls and a mere three-hours later, we were checking into the Aviator. The staff here are brilliant. Local, charming, sweet and utterly professional. We had a few problems with our room but they were dealt with swiftly and graciously. We were booked in for two nights and we didn't leave the hotel once! Just watched movies (excellent selection) ate, drank and lounged. If you plan on doing what we did and not leaving the hotel, I would recommend paying the extra for a Sky Studio. This is the only room grade where you get a bath and the free minibar is a real treat!

Sarah, BlackSmith, stayed on 27 Nov 2010

This is a marvellous place to go if you want to get away but not too far. We have been twice (unusual for us) and close the curtains, get the DVD box sets out and make the most of room service/the free mini bar. It's a stress free weekend where everything works. The staff are fantastic. If you want to get out I'd recommend Guildford (only 10 mins drive). Olivio,s (on, I think, Castle Street near) is nice for a low key supper.

Kate, BlackSmith, stayed on 26 Nov 2010

We found the location and building quite strange! But we had a really relaxing weekend break at the Aviator. Even though our room did not have a view of the airfield and looked over the main road there was no traffic noise at all. The stylish, comfortable room, bathrobes, slippers, free movie library, wi-fi and daily newspaper all added up to a great place to go if you don't want to do very much at all. The staff were friendly and helpful, we ate in the Brasserie for dinner one night and breakfast on both mornings which was fine. We also had lunch at Cote Brasserie in Farnham one day and can recommend Paprika, an Indian restaurant 2 minutes from the hotel. 12pm checkout on Sunday was nice as well - a good, (slightly puzzling!) hotel for a quick getaway from London.

Cheryl, BlackSmith, stayed on 19 Nov 2010

Aviator's building and rooms are a triumph of form and function. Service is a hard-to-strike balance of unobtrusiveness, sufficiency and enthusiasm. Very well done!

Monique, BlackSmith, stayed on 28 Aug 2010

We found a superb restaurant called The Crab & Anchor in Southwood, behind Morrison's supermarket, so an unlikely place to find a hidden gem! But the food was absolutely wonderful! Dishes from all around the world and realistic prices too, very scrummy! (It also had wheelchair access with a ramp at the back, and a disabled toilet.)

MARIA, BlackSmith, stayed on 28 Aug 2010

We stayed at Aviator, and spent a day at Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge, where you can have all sorts of driving experiences: off-road, circuit and skid pan etc. To add to the experience we visited the Brooklands Museum on the same site, which has loads of antique cars, motorbikes, bicycles and aeroplanes, incuding a concorde experience. Generally a brilliant day out and within 15/20 mins from the aviator. Also, not too far away in Godalming is a great restuarant called Bel & The Dragon. It's a converted chapel that does lovely brasserie-style food (quite rustic in a good way), with a wine cellar set in the pipes of the old organ. Guildford is also just a short drive away, and a lovely town for quality shopping.

Mark, BlackSmith, stayed on 28 Aug 2010

The hotel was excellent. Brilliant hotel for some relaxing get away from it all. Nearby Farnham is your best bet for eating out. We tried Farnborough itself but even the recommended pubs and restaurants weren't very nice.

Roisin, SilverSmith, stayed on 28 Aug 2010

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Aviator hotel. A trip to the local town of Farnham is a wonderful diversion for a leisurely lunch in one of the small courtyard bistros, (we chose Le Club Chocolat in the Lion and Lamb Courtyard) followed by a wander round the numerous independent retailers.

Aviator's restaurant served mouth-wateringly delightful food, with prompt and polite service. We chose to eat at the Swann Inn for our second evening. This lively pub served big portions of beer-battered fish and local pies, but I would advise avoiding the pan-fried duck breast, which was overly tough and cooked in an unpleasant tasting oil.

Locally, we tried the Blackbushe Market on Sunday morning, advertised as one of the largest outdoor markets in Europe. We were expecting a market of local produce, arts and crafts etc, but were met with stall after stall of poor quality tat,
greasy spoon road-side cafe trailers and an unpleasantly crowded atmosphere. Our best advice is to avoid at all cost!

David, BlackSmith, stayed on 27 Aug 2010

Excellent hotel with great food and wonderful, friendly staff. The welcome cocktails were lovely and the Mr & Mrs Smith deal of champagne and strawberries was just the thing to start off the weekend. My toddler was wearing a Red Arrows flight suit (from Farnborough Air show earlier in the year) and management made a big deal about it, and gave him a little booklet about the Red Arrows as the team slept there during the show. He loved it! We also booked a babysitter one evening, and as the usual lady was unavailable, they called around for someone else that they knew well and who had experience. Our son loved her and it meant we could have dinner without a rush or any guilt! We will most definitely return.

Salome, BlackSmith, stayed on 13 Aug 2010

Worth going to Blackbushe market on Sunday morning just up the A30 for a bargain, or go to Farnham Castle for a bit of culture, and the aircraft museum is only a short stroll from the Aviator hotel.

MARIA, BlackSmith, stayed on 31 Jul 2010

A boutique stopover, convenient for the airports or the south coast ports. Sit outside in the sun and enjoy a drink or sit watching the aeroplanes come and go from the airside rooms. It's only a short drive to the New Forest if you fancy the great outdoors.

Check out was later on a Sunday than during the week if you have time for a lazy getaway.

Alice, BlackSmith, stayed on 10 Jul 2010

As a couple always on the lookout for an hotel experience that caters to our individual as well as joint needs, we tend set the bar quite high. For that reason a return visit to the Aviator was more than overdue and it didn't disappoint, from the warm, courteous and knowledgable staff to the modern opulent rooms eveything was a delight. We understand that this review should cover the local, flora/fauna etc., but frankly it's hard to compare anything else when you have such quality at the touch of a touchtone telephone.

Malika, BlackSmith, stayed on 18 Jun 2010

What superlatives can be used when discussing this hotel? I suspect they have all been used so i'll keep it simple. As a proverbial seven year old boy trapped in a forty-eight year old's body, this masculine playpen (which doesn't exclude the ladies I hasten to add) has everything going for it; genius design that references parts of an aircraft, a media centre in our room to die for (tv in the tub anyone?), a 'high roller' mini -bar, Farnborough Airport in the back yard for plane spotting, two local high quality Indian take-aways across the road, an incredible in-house deli and a restaurant with high quality, locally sourced ingredients, crafted by a master-chef. Crown this with impeccable service, care and attention from the staff and you have a near perfect experience. With plans to enlarge their leisure facilities, their knack for catering to their clients borders on telepathic.

Dads I know you should be grateful for your annual bottle of 'Brut' aftershave for Father's Day, but if you can drop the biggest hint to your offspring regard this oasis, it's more than worth the modest prices for booking and if you can, go for the suites.

Malika, BlackSmith, stayed on 29 May 2010

Talk about a repeat prescription, this hotel should definitely be available as an NHS treatment.

Attentive, friendly staff for whom no favour is too much. Opulent, modern rooms, with more technology than you can shake a remote control at; you can also watch luxury jets fly in and out of Farnborough Airport (make sure you book an Air Room)and check out the hotel's restaurant and for lunch their outstanding deli for top quality cooking. If you don't fancy the hi tech gym, head further afield to work off your big lunch/dinner by checking out the nearby North Downs trail or take a short trip into Farnham with its glut of independent shops. If you're after some culture check out Watt's Gallery in nearby Compton Village. An excellent experience everytime we go.

We stopped at the Aviator over a wet, cold UK Bank Holiday weekend. Our plans of hiring bikes through the countryside curtailed, we set about making a "den" for ourselves in the hotel. Having been upgraded to a sky suite this was fairly easy to do what with the free minibar, free movies, free music playlist and giant bath we spent 3 days literally mooching from room to cocktail bar to restaurant to deli to lounge and back to room...and it was simply superb!

The staff were beyond helpful and genuinely friendly, the food was excellent and we left chilled out, happy and having had a superb Bank Hol weekend. We would definately recommend the Aviator for similar den-like get aways!

Lyndsey, BlackSmith, stayed on 1 May 2010

Lovely hotel in a slightly random location - Farnborough does not have much to recommend it I'm afraid! However, we loved our room and watching the little private jets landing and taking off. The food in the hotel brasserie was good and we also visited Loch Fyne in nearby Farnham. A trip to Mercedes Benz world on our way home was also quite fun.

Jenny, BlackSmith, stayed on 1 May 2010

We had a fantastic morning strolling around Winkworth National Trust Arboretum which was a 25min drive from the Aviator and then finished off by a long lunch at The Seahorse, Godalming. Wonderful food and impressive wine list in very chic (for a pub) surroundings. The Seahorse Pub and Dining Rooms is on the way back to the Aviator.

Rebecca, BlackSmith, stayed on 23 Apr 2010

This Starck-esque hotel is great to hideaway in and enjoy slow cocktails. The views of Farnborough airport are impressive and the restaurant full of delicious treats. We headed out to Farnham which is a beautiful old town and worth a wonder around. There are all sorts of little restaurants and bars to enjoy although we headed to the more established Loch Fyne (the conservatory has great tables) restaurant. This area is littered with quaint pubs and villages and losing yourself on a lazy drive is the best approach particularly if you follow the river that runs gently through Fleet.

James, GoldSmith, stayed on 16 Apr 2010

Our wonderful Mr & Mrs Smith hotel put us within an hour's drive of Forest Falconry where I was lucky enough to be treated to full day's flying by my lovely husband. On a wooded ridge at the edge of the New Forest, I met and flew owls, hawks and even a massive golden eagle! The owner regales you throughout with amusing and scary anecdotes of his life with birds, and lunch is at the local country pub. A fantastic day and thoroughly recommended.

Sarah, BlackSmith, stayed on 5 Mar 2010

I can honestly say that our weekend at The Aviator was one of the most relaxing and indulgent ever! We booked a suite and literally only left to go for dinner and cocktails on both evenings. The room was amazing and the food, service and staff were exemplary – they certainly know what real customer service was all about. We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this as a perfect place to go for a romantic, selfish weekend away!

Sarah, BlackSmith, stayed on 26 Feb 2010

My girlfriend and I couldn't fault the hotel. The two-for-one offer through Mr & Mrs Smith meant that we went for an Aviator Plus room. Our only small criticism, and this is a small one, was the restaurant. We ate there both nights of our stay and were a little disappointed that the menu didn't change at all. Having said that, the food on both nights was great. We didn't really explore the area too much due to the weather, but the plush room more than made up for mother nature's worst! Being airport-side was an added bonus – we enjoyed the buzz of watching planes take off and land. In summary, great hotel, great offer, go!

Bruce, BlackSmith, stayed on 26 Feb 2010

This is an amazing landmark hotel which you would not expect to see in Farnborough. When I read that it had views of the airport I was slightly alarmed, but flights are tightly controlled and no planes come in after 10pm. The rooms are probably the best I have stayed in in a UK hotel – excellent room and bathroom. It's well worth upgrading to get an air view. The Sky bar is very relaxing and reasonably priced for the rating of the hotel.
