Built in 1868 in the traditionally grandiose manner of a civic banking headquarters, the imposing Victorian building that houses 62 Castle Street belies the contemporary warmth within. The Liverpool boutique hotel’s score of suites are all palatially dimensioned and spiked with art deco touches.

- Hotel restaurant Look out for spatchcock chicken and crispy risotto cakes on the menu at the hotel's restaurant, Merchants at 62. A Continental breakfast buffet is served in the Castle Suite. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance too.
- Dress code Merseybeat chic.
- Last orders Merchants is open for breakfast 7am until 11am during the week (from 8am at the weekend), and for lunch and dinner, Monday to Saturday, from noon until 10pm. The bar's open until 11pm, midnight on Firday and Saturday.
- Room service A select menu can be brought to your bedroom between 12 noon and 10.30pm.
- Hotel bar Until the new bar and restaurant opens, there's a selection of wines, champagne and spirits available, either in your room or in the Castle Suite.

After the super-plush Grand Suite, the largest and most dramatic rooms are the Master Suites on the second floor. Book a corner suite such as 201, 204, 26 or 209 if you fancy bagging yourself the most photogenic city views from the dizzying stone balconies.
Packing tips
62 Castle Street’s rooms don’t come with DVD players, so pack a portable if you want to cosy up on the leather sofa with a film. In winter, it can get windy down at the docks, so bring a snuggly scarf to stave off the chills.

Although the hotel is too small to have its own pool, guests can nab £15 passes at reception for the Crowne Plaza Harbour Club, giving them use of the club’s pool, Jacuzzi and spa facilities.
