Perthshire Overview

United Kingdom

Countryscape
Lochs, hilltops and trees
Country life
Mountain-walking, music-making

Not far north of Glasgow and Edinburgh is Perthshire, home to a hearty slice of authentic rural Scotland. No wonder Sir Walter Scott waxed lyrical about the landscapes, setting much of Rob Roy here.

Perthshire offers adventure in every season. Outdoorsy types can enjoy golf at Perth's many famous courses including Gleneagles, or try out snowsports in the winter months. The varied scenery of hills, glens and woodland, such as in Black Sprout Wood in Pitlochry, offers a colourful backdrop to the red squirrels and roe deer that call Perthshire home. The city of Perth is situated between two grand public parks, with genteel Georgian architecture and the Tay Street promenade offering lovely riverside views. Home to Scotland’s biggest music festival, T in the Park, rural Perthshire even has something for the mud-loving music fanatic.

Local knowledge

Do go/don't go
There’s something to do all year round, but in the autumn the woodland becomes spectacular as the leaves change. Winter is for the skiers and snowboarders especially, whereas spring and summer are for admiring the wildlife.
