Boudro’s
This upscale Texan bistro on the River Walk specialises in meat and fish dishes. Eat outside on the water’s edge, or inside where it’s dark and candlelit. Book, and go later to avoid families and children.

Guillermo’s Downtown
This is a place where the food does the talking. Be seated at a simple, café-style table and pick from the home-made pasta, pizza and foccacia sandwich selection. The famous pasta salad is a must, but be warned: portions are truly Texan-style (huge and hearty).

Il Sogno
This restaurant in the chicly converted, industrial Pearl Brewery offers authentic Italian dining, such as white-bean purée as an antipasto and lasagne with wild mushrooms. There’s a wood-burning oven in the open kitchen. Reservations aren’t taken, so join the queues early.

Liberty Bar
Housed in a convent conversion in Southtown, Liberty Bar has a lengthy selection of feel-good grub. Expect chicken salads, grilled cheese and the odd burger.

Sand Bar Fish House & Market
This Pearl Brewery fish bar excels in all that is raw: sashimi, ceviches and oysters. Their lobster bisque isn’t at all bad, either. There’s a fish market on site, too, so you can take some home with you.

Taco Heaven
This Southdown dive bar cooks up the best tacos in town, and the breakfasts aren’t bad, either. Look out for a tiny old Mexican lady selling slabs of delicious cake for no more than a couple of bucks.

Madhatter’s Tea House & Café
This brunch spot in Southtown serves a mean Texan cuppa (iced tea) and several freshly baked goods for the locals who come to bury themselves in a book here.
