1918 Bistro & Grill

Other Barossa restaurants come and go, but 1918 Bistro & Grill, occupying a 1918 house off the main street under a mammoth Norfolk Island pine tree, is an enduring gem. It’s an upmarket operation serving creative Asian- and Middle Eastern-inspired mains. Peruse the sensational wine list from a table on the veranda – the place to be for a lazy summer lunch.

The Branch

Break into this converted red-brick bank vault in Nuriootpa for hip Mod-Oz offerings (burgers, pizza, salads and risottos) plus the odd Asian and Euro interloper like the lamb madras curry and Thai beef salad. Big breakfasts, heart-starter coffee and impressive wine and beer lists too.

Vintners Bar & Grill

Classy, classy, classy… Vintners is arguably the Barossa’s best restaurant (oh, how they argue), with a winning formula of simple elegance in both ambience and food. Expect vineyard views, white linen, attentive service, outdoor summer tables and an open fire in winter. Perfect.

Collingrove Homestead

Six kilometres south east of Angaston, the rambling Collingrove Homestead was knocked into shape by John Angas (of Angaston fame) in 1856. These days it’s run by the National Trust, who provide an antique-strewn setting for afternoon Devonshire teas. It’s open from 1pm–4.30pm Monday to Friday, and from 12 noon–4.30pm Saturday and Sunday.

Linke's Nuriootpa Bakery & Tea Rooms

It’s worth detouring a few kilometres north of Tanunda to the Barossa’s agricultural hub, Nuriootpa (just ‘Nuri’ to the locals), for the amazing bienenstich (a German cream-nut-and-honey pastry monstrosity) at this long-standing bakery. Less menacing sandwiches, juices, pies and baguettes also available.

Lyndoch Bakery & Restaurant

This traditional German-style bakery, down the road from Tanunda in Lyndoch (technically the Barossa’s southern-most town), has had food-fans peeling off the highway for years. Expect plenty of pretzels, heavy rye breads, sauerkraut, wursts, fruit pies, cakes, salads and hefty ham-and-cheese-filled sandwiches.
