Smith tip

Culture and skiing don’t normally go together but Verbier is a little bit different. It’s a short drive or train ride from the resort to Martigny, home of the excellent Foundation Pierre Gianadda (www.gianadda.ch). This is a complex of galleries, museums and concert halls which hosts exhibitions by artists such as Chagall, Kandinsky and Van Gogh as well as staging numerous classical concerts.

Le Ti Chalet

Verbier, Switzerland[view map]

It’s only five minutes' walk downhill to the centre of the resort. Verbier has a well-deserved reputation for having some of the best après-ski and nightlife in the Swiss Alps. The chalet’s chauffeur-driven 4x4s are available 24 hours a day to take you wherever you want to go in the valley.

Slope off for lunch

Chez Dany is a Verbier institution with a wonderful atmosphere and even better views. It’s between les Ruinettes and Verbier, and their speciality is croute au fromage – baked bread with ham, egg and Swiss cheese (+41 (0)27 771 2524).

Activities

With over 250 miles of runs, Verbier has skiing to suit all levels of ability, but intermediate and experienced skiers in particular will find plenty of challenging slopes to tackle; the north face of Mont-Fort is not for the faint-hearted. As well as famous routes like Stairway to Heaven, Verbier also has some of the best and most accessible off-piste skiing in the Alps. Beginners aren’t left out though – there are gentler options, particularly on Les Ruinettes and Savoleyres. There’s also a host of other activities, including paragliding, skidooing, snow shoeing, ice-skating and two 10-kilometre toboggan runs. La Fantastique offer these activities as well as ice climbing (www.lafantastique.com).

Ski services

The chalet staff can pre-arrange lift passes and ski lessons for you as well as in-chalet ski and boot fitting, which takes the hassle out of getting onto the slopes. The staff offer a very useful guided piste orientation on Mondays. If you want to try some heli-skiing, husky-mushing or skidooing the chalet staff can take care of everything. They have special arrangements with the leading companies at the resort and for convenience everything can be added to one bill, payable at the end of your stay.

In the Summer months

Unlike many resorts that close down at the end of the winter, Verbier has plenty of activities in the summer. The resort is popular with hikers and walkers and La Fantastique offers mountaineering, mountain biking and canyoning. Alternatively you can head for the hills on a quad bike with Quad Adventure (www.quadaventure.ch). There are over 250 miles of waymarked hiking paths across the Val de Bagnes. The route via La Chaux, Col Termin and Fionnay is one of the best, and there’s a good chance of seeing marmots and ibexes.

Restaurants

Pierroz at Rosalp

(+41 (0)27 771 6323)

Chef Roland Pierroz has established an unmatched reputation in the resort and serves perhaps the best French cuisine in Verbier. This Michelin-starred restaurant is ideal for a special occasion.

Chalet Adrien

(+41 (0)27 771 62 00)

Unusually for Verbier, the excellent, Michelin-starred L'Appartement restaurant specialises in Italian cuisine. Nicolas Isnard, their celebrated chef, only works here in the winter season.

Bars

Le Crok Bar

(+41 (0)27 771 6934)

This sophisticated bar retains a laid-back and relaxed atmosphere. It’s Alpine Modernist interior is a great setting for some cocktails before heading for Verbier’s nightclubs.

Cafes

Offshore

(+41 (0)27 771 5444)

Nowhere does better hot chocolate than this café right by the Médran lift. It’s a welcome sight at the end of a hard day’s skiing or a perfect way to start your morning on the slopes.

Pubs

Pub Mont-Fort

(+41 (0)27 771 4849)

A lively and friendly bar which has been a mainstay of the seasonal (particularly the British) party scene for many a winter. It’s more a place for shots rather than slow cocktails. Don’t expect to be the first on the slopes in the morning.
