Smith tip

The area around the chalet is perfect for sledging. There are also dedicated sledge runs at Gotschnaboden, Alpenrosli and Malcheti which provide sledges for free. Davos is famous for producing classic wooden sledges and the resort has the floodlit Davos Platz run to try them out on.

Klosters, Switzerland

Klosters is one of the most beautiful resorts in the Alps and its year-round appeal has made it highly prized among Europe’s elite. Chic sophistication and quite elegance is was Klosters offers; it’s a far cry from the purpose-built ski factories elsewhere in the mountains.

Slope off for lunch

Bruhin’s at Weissfluhgipfel has a view over the Alps that stretches from Bernina to Säntis and offers equally marvellous cuisine, too. The wine list is particularly good (+41 (0)81 417 66 44).

Activities

Winter The resort of Klosters may be a destination in itself but the surrounding peaks offer excellent skiing, too. There’s almost 230 miles of piste in the area including Parsenn which combines intermediate and steeper terrain. Off-piste is more limited but there’s the 12-mile descent from Gotschna to Jenaz in good snow conditions. Switzerland allows heli-skiing and the chalet organises night skiing, too. Klosters has a fantastic choice of non-ski options including snow-shoeing and horse drawn sledge rides as well as ice skating and curling at the Sports Centre.

Ski services

If you wish, the chalet manager can arrange everything before your arrival including your ski pass. In-chalet equipment fittings is provided by Bardills and ski lessons, mountain guides, skidooing, snowshoeing and parapenting can be organised and booked in advance. The chalet uses hand-picked mountain guides from Nici Stoltz who have years of experience in the surrounding mountains.

In the Summer months

Klosters is a year-round resort and attracts plenty of visitors throughout the summer months. The Davos-Klosters region and the Prättigau have over 400 miles of hiking trails and almost 100 miles of mountain bike tracks, all through beautiful Alpine scenery. If you prefer a more sedate means of admiring the landscape the Bernina Express and Glacier Express trains both travel via nearby Davos and their panoramic carriages provide spectacular vistas at almost every turn. There’s a nine-hole golf course at the resort and a further six 18-hole courses within 60 minutes of the chalet, too.

Restaurants

Walserhof

(+41 (0)81 410 29 29)

This two-star Michelin restaurant is very highly regarded, serving outstanding traditional and seasonal dishes complemented with a fine international wine cellar.

Chesa Grischuna

(+41 (0)81 422 22 22)

The à la carte menu uses the freshest ingredients to produce excellent international cuisine. The vegetarian specialities are particularly good and the cellar has over 150 different wines to choose from. Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn and Winston Churchill were among the restaurant’s dedicated patrons.

Restaurant Teufi

(+41 (0)81 416 35 82)

This restaurant is just outside Davos and the chalet often arranges for guests to be driven there by horse drawn carriage. The food is traditional and the Fondue Chinoise is particularly popular.

Bars

Chesa Bar

(+41 (0)81 422 22 22)

Those seeking riotous après ski should head elsewhere and find an entirely different resort. The Chesa bar at the Chesa Grischuna is typical of Klosters: Old World charm mixed with traditional sophistication. They have very good live jazz.

Casa Antica

This cocktail bar and nightclub is where Klosters night-owls go for a late night drink. In line with the resort’s style, this is primarily a piano bar rather than a disco although there’s a dance floor on the ground floor.
