Smith tip

If you’re an experienced skier, then try to tackle some of the black runs at the beginning of the week. They’re prepared on Saturdays and they get progressively busier during the week as intermediate skiers build up their confidence.

Chalet Blanchot

Courchevel, France[view map]

Belvedere is a quiet and secluded part of Courchevel, but the main centre of the resort is only a few minutes chauffeured drive away. This offers some of the most stylish restaurants, bars and clubs in the French Alps.

Slope off for lunch

La Bergerie (+33 (0)4 79 08 24 70) is just above 1850, to the right of Bellecote. It doesn’t have a terrace but the rustic interior of this former sheep shed is a great place for hot chocolate and a hearty lunch on an overcast day.

Activities

Courchevel is part of the Trois Vallées ski area – the largest in Europe. There are more than 200 ski lifts and almost 350 ski runs in the immediate area, offering suitable terrain for both beginners and experienced skiers. The resort’s high altitude usually guarantees excellent conditions and serious skiers will love the black Les Suisses run and the off-piste couloirs near the Saulire. You can also try skidooing, hot-air ballooning, parapenting, ice-skating, tobogganing and snow-shoeing. For really extreme sports, take a transfer to La Plagne to shoot the bobsleigh run or head to Tignes for some ice-diving. For more information, contact Whitetracks (+33 (0)6 86 12 34 17; www.whitetracks.co.uk).

Ski services

The chalet can organise ski equipment and lift passes at your convenience. Courchevel has a fantastic hands-free lift pass system. Guests are entitled to a 20 per cent discount at Gilbert Sports (+33 (0)4 79 08 16 46). The chalet can also arrange ski lessons and the services of hand-picked guides, who will help you get the most out of the 200 ski lifts and 330 ski runs – as well as the extensive off-piste.
