Guestbook

'A stunning barn and real rural retreat from London. One of our party fell in love with the barn floor; I fell in love with the sound of sheep and the cockerel – I wish I could tape it to wake us up in the Big Smoke'
'It was such a beautiful time – complemented by incredible architecture, luxury, company, views and all went smoothly. We will most definitely be back'

Smith tip

Crabbing is a great little diversion on your visit to the Norfolk coast. Wells, Blakeney, Brancaster and Burnham Overy are the best places to go, and plenty of shops sell crabbing kits. You can also try your luck on the bridges in Morston marshes, too. Essentially all you need is a line, a bucket and some bacon; we’re told that putting the bacon in an empty washing powder tablet bag is a neat trick. The crabs don’t seem to be able to resist the lure of some streaky. Watch out for those claws though.

Quaker Barn

Norfolk, United Kingdom[view map]

Style
Contemporary rural idyll
Setting
Wide-open Norfolk countryside

Set amid the beautiful Norfolk countryside, the two 18th-century barns at Quaker Hall blend seamlessly with their pastoral setting. Inside, however, you’ll find sleek, contemporary interiors that feel thoroughly metropolitan; luckily the views across the farmland help you remember where you are. The larger Hall Barn and the more intimate Quaker Barn are both the perfect marriage of old and new, rural and urban. Inglenook fireplaces and a lattice-work of oak beams sit well with tactile marble resin flooring and granite surfaces. The double-height living space, which opens up onto the secluded garden, is the perfect place to relax and unwind.

In the know

Eating and drinking
The oak dining tables in both barns can comfortably seat eight, and both properties also have similar dining tables outside on the terrace; ideal for a barbecue in fine weather. The barns are self-catered, but the excellent Blakeney Deli can cater for dinner parties, barbecues, picnics and children’s parties (www.blakeneydeli.co.uk). For barbecues, dinner parties, picnics and children’s meals, Blakeney's is the best choice. Standard meal menus are £16 a head, while the three-course dinner party menus are £26 per person when pre-prepared or £37 per person when cooked for you at the barn; a minimum order of eight is required. Picnics are £12.50 per person with a minimum order of six.

Is provided once a week and can be offered daily at an additional charge.
Entertainment
Each barn has a CD player in the sitting room. It’s possible to have a three-day midweek cookery break at Quaker Barn under the expert guidance of local chef Neil Dowson. Quaker Barn also offers midweek yoga and beauty therapy breaks as well, with a wide selection of treatments to choose from.
Provided
Bed linen, towels and toiletries. Kindling and firewood for the fires in the sitting rooms are provided during the winter.
Packing tips
There are some fantastic sandy beaches on the Norfolk coast, so come prepared. Holkham and Wells-next-the-Sea are two of the finest beaches and are ideal for sand castles and kite flying.
