Palm trees and purple bougainvillea form the first welcome-party line as you arrive at this exclusive finca tucked away on the south of the island. Electric gates usher you through with a sense of urgency that suggests something magical awaits. Pass the old studded wooden finca door that’s as thick as a plank and this is confirmed.
Sitting in peaceful countryside just five minutes from the village of San Josep, Can Rumani is the epitome of sleek, grown-up Ibiza glamour. Crumbly finca walls with no pretension curve around immaculate, Moroccan-inspired, high-design rustica – while flashes of burnt umber glow as brightly as an Ibizan sunset. In the open-plan living and dining room, a huge basket of logs tempts you to light a fire, regardless of the weather. Heavy twisted wood propped in the corner fuses with wooden ceiling beams, church candles and old carved oak chairs around the biggest dining table ever. This is modernism with a Moorish touch.
A refreshingly toe-cooling taupe stone floor swirls throughout, guiding you past pristine white sofas, spotlit stairs and splashes of art – before a floor-to-ceiling glass door leads to the sun-kissed pool. Walk out into the garden and the only sign of habitation you’ll be able to detect is the sound of distant cockerels. A waft of lavender scent heightens the sensory overload, while more of the villa’s trademark bougainvillea weaves and wriggles over the white cube-shaped guesthouse. Take the tunnel stairs up to the master bedroom, alone on its own floor – and another huge studded wooden door adds to that sense of shut-the-world-out privacy.
Ideal for a stylish holiday with friends, or a family celebration, Can Rumani manages to retain that ancient finca personality – it’s luxurious, but manageable; spacious, yet not so enormous that you immediately lose yourself and all your fellow guests. And with its homely simplicity, yet first-class, A-list design, no wonder this villa is a favourite amongst celebrities.
