Chalet Eugenia

Klosters, Switzerland

Chalet Eugenia is filled with a sense of character and history. The comforts are everything you could wish for in a contemporary chalet but without compromising on the interior’s stylish baroque flourishes which are enhanced with antique furniture and paintings. Almost all rooms have fantastic views either across or down the valley.

Interior

Bedrooms

The Master bedroom: If you’ve organised this group then this is just reward. Occupying the whole of the top floor this bedroom is very spacious and its large bathroom has a wet room and a free-standing roll-top bath next to its own fireplace.
Bedroom 2: This bedroom has arguably the best view. It has a corner fireplace and an en suite bathroom with roll-top bath.
Bedroom 3: Often used as a single room, or a very cosy double, this pine-paneled bedroom has bags of character but a limited view up the mountainside. It has an en suite shower room.
Bedroom 4: On the second floor, this is a double/twin bedroom with an en suite bathroom and roll-top bath. It also has its own fireplace.
Bedroom 5: A spacious double room which has great views across the valley. It shares a bathroom with Bedroom 6 so these two rooms are ideal for a family with children.
Bedroom 6: A smaller twin bedroom which is often used as a children’s room.
Bedroom 7: This is a spacious double/twin room which has twin aspects across and down the valley. It also has an en suite bathroom.
Bedroom 8: This en suite double/twin room on the ground floor is pine paneled and traditionally styled with antique paintings, carved ceiling beams and Alpine fabrics.

Kitchen The main kitchen is the chef’s domain but there’s also a charming, rustic scullery next to the dining room. It’s often used for children’s meals but its corner fireplace is also great for an informal grill.

Living room Spectacular views, a central stone fireplace, antique furniture, pine beams and comfortable high-backed chairs make this a great place to relax. If you can’t play the piano then there’s always the Bose entertainment system.

Dining room The stately, baronial dining room is lined with dark wood panels and old family portraits. All chalet guests can comfortably be seated at the table in front of the imposing fireplace.

Other There’s a spa area with sauna and steam bath which is fully stocked with Soleil Noir products. The study on the first floor is equipped with a printer, computer, internet access and DVD player. It’s also sometimes used as a children’s playroom.

Outdoor

Poolside There’s a hot tub just to the side of the chalet.

Gardens Although it’s only a couple of minutes from the centre of the resort, the chalet’s small garden is surrounded by Alpine pastures. They’re great for sledging in the winter. The living room, dining room and bedrooms all have balconies which catch the sun.

Parking There’s enough space for five cars to park right outside the chalet.

Chalet Eugenia

Klosters, Switzerland

Klosters is one of the most beautiful resorts in the Alps and its year-round appeal has made it highly prized among Europe’s elite. Chic sophistication and quite elegance is was Klosters offers; it’s a far cry from the purpose-built ski factories elsewhere in the mountains.

Activities

Winter The resort of Klosters may be a destination in itself but the surrounding peaks offer excellent skiing, too. There’s almost 230 miles of piste in the area including Parsenn which combines intermediate and steeper terrain. Off-piste is more limited but there’s the 12-mile descent from Gotschna to Jenaz in good snow conditions. Switzerland allows heli-skiing and the chalet organises night skiing, too. Klosters has a fantastic choice of non-ski options including snow-shoeing and horse drawn sledge rides as well as ice skating and curling at the Sports Centre.

Smith tip

The area around the chalet is perfect for sledging. There are also dedicated sledge runs at Gotschnaboden, Alpenrosli and Malcheti which provide sledges for free. Davos is famous for producing classic wooden sledges and the resort has the floodlit Davos Platz run to try them out on.

Bars

Casa Antica

This cocktail bar and nightclub is where Klosters night-owls go for a late night drink. In line with the resort’s style, this is primarily a piano bar rather than a disco although there’s a dance floor on the ground floor.

Getting there

Planes Zurich airport is two and a half hours or less from Klosters. It’s such a well designed transport hub that it even manages to put the pleasure back into plane travel (www.zurich-airport.com). Swiss Airlines and BA both have regular flights. Swiss Airlines from City airport is very convenient for Londoners.

Trains The Swiss railway network is predictably efficient and modern; it doesn’t let things like mountains get in the way. Hourly train connections to Zurich take two hours, or two and a half hours to Zurich airport.

Local taxi service Call Angelo's Taxi on +41 (0)81 416 73 73.

Directions by road From Zurich airport follow the signs into Zurich and then on to Chur. Turn off at Landquart ten miles before Chur and follow the signs to Davos. Follow the signs into Klosters and past the modern church then take the first left signposted to Aeuja and Mondbiel. Talstrasse is on the left, 100 metres further on. The chalet is 400 metres up Talstrasse on the left, with a ‘Privatweg’ sign.

Chalet Eugenia

Klosters, Switzerland

A highlight for many guests is a horse-drawn carriage ride through the snow followed by a delicious fondue – it’s the perfect way to enjoy the magnificent Swiss Alps

Klosters is arguably the most beautiful resort in the Alps but it doesn’t like to court attention like its flashier rivals; after all, it hardly needs to. Its sophisticated and elegant air makes it a perennial favourite with Europe’s care-worn aristocracy eager to avoid the limelight and enjoy the mountains in peace. One of the first to fall for Klosters’ charm was Baroness Thyssen-Bornemisza who built Chalet Eugenia as a family winter retreat in the early days of the resort. It’s hard to imagine a place that better encapsulates this famous Alpine town.

Eugenia is surrounded by mountain pastures but is only two chauffeur-driven minutes from the centre of town. Most rooms have their own balconies with fabulous southerly views over the resort to the slopes of the impressive Gotschna. You can enjoy these views to the full from the comfort of the suitably baronial living room with its central stone fireplace. Next door the dining room is richly panelled with dark wood creating the ideal surroundings for dinner parties. For something less grand but equally stylish a small, rustic second dining room is perfect for relaxed meals next to the wood-fired grill.

The chalet’s bedrooms boast the same Old World charm and refinement. Up to 16 guests can be accommodated in eight bedrooms – six en suite. Each is gloriously comfortable but the master bedroom on the top floor is in a league of its own. The spacious bathroom even has its own fireplace and there can no finer way to unwind that in the roll-top bath next to a roaring fire. Other guests needn’t be too jealous as the spa on the ground floor is fully equipped with a sauna and steam room and a wide range of soothing in-chalet treatments can be arranged. Guests are also free to use the exclusive Vereina Spa a short stroll from the chalet.

In keeping with the original use of the chalet, Eugenia is ideal for families. A children’s ski lift is right on the doorstep and the gently sloping terrain is an ideal place for sledging or learning to ski. Everything you might need for infants and older children can be provided so there’s no need to struggle through Arrivals weighted down with kit. Hand-picked and fully-qualified nannies are also available.

The service at Chalet Eugenia is exceptional, as it is at its sister property of Chalet Falcun a short distance up the mountainside; a six staff are on hand to pamper you rotten. The chalet chef prepares breakfast and afternoon tea each day as well as a gourmet evening meal six nights a week. The chalet manager arranges all ski hire, lift passes and mountain guides for you and can recommend and book the very best restaurants and activities in Klosters. A highlight for many guests is a horse-drawn carriage ride through the snow followed by a delicious fondue – it’s the perfect way to enjoy the magnificent Swiss Alps.
