Courchevel has fantastic skiing but that's only part its appeal. Style on and off the slopes is of equal importance and you won't find smarter or sleeker restaurants and nightclubs anywhere else in the Alps.
Activities
Activities
Courchevel is part of the Trois Vallées ski area – the largest in Europe. There are over 200 ski lifts and almost 350 runs in the immediate area, offering suitable terrain for both beginners and experienced skiers. The resort’s high altitude usually guarantees excellent conditions and serious skiers will love the black Les Suisses run as well as the off-piste couloirs from The Saulire. Try to ski the black runs at the beginning of the week as they become crowded towards the weekend, as people build up their courage. Courchevel also has excellent snowboarding conditions and heli-skiing trips over the border to Italy can be arranged. You can also enjoy skidooing, hot-air ballooning, parapenting, ice-skating, tobogganing and snow shoeing. For really extreme sports, take a transfer to nearby La Plagne to shoot the bobsleigh run or head to Tignes to try some ice-diving. Contact Whitetracks on +33 (0)686 12 34 17, www.whitetracks.co.uk.
Smith tip
You can transfer from the main regional airports to Courchevel by small private plane. Chalet Les Sorbiers is on the road up to the Altiport. Take-off and landing is not for the faint hearted, with the runway built on a slope. This means you either have to land facing uphill or take off pointing downhill – gulp! A helicopter may be a better idea (www.helicopter-courchevel.com).

Review
Chalet Les Sorbiers gives you the best of both worlds: the services and facilities of the resort's peerless Hotel Kilimandjaro, combined with the seclusion and personal attention of a private chalet. Located in the rarefied upper reaches of Courchevel 1850, this larch wood and stone property will make you feel totally at home in the the French Alps' most glamourous and sophisticated resort. The traditional lines of the exterior conceal a charming interior dedicated to style and comfort.
Traditional features such as antler chandeliers and waxed oak floors are blended with all the modern conveniences necessary for the perfect escape to the mountains. It's only a short stroll to the nearest ski lift but guests will undoubtedly have to tear themselves away from the relaxed environment of the chalet. Each of the five individually designed double bedrooms is cosy and serene. Some have their own fireplace while others have a private sitting area. All rooms have an en suite marble bathroom.
The main living area has a spectacular central fireplace around which you can enjoy drinks in the evening. Alpine flourishes such as ice skates, antique sledges, milk churns and even a stuffed bear gazing out from the wall are combined with a state-of-the-art home cinema and large LCD TV. The neighbouring dining table comfortably seats all 10 guests and is beneath the rather magnificent antler chandelier. Chalet Les Sorbiers has its own butler and professional chef who prepare breakfast, afternoon tea and a gourmet evening meal every day. Meals can be tailored to your personal requirements and Kilimandjaro’s excellent wine cellar will satisfy the most discerning connoisseur.
Courchevel is part of the Trois Vallées ski area – the largest in Europe – and is ideal for all levels of ability. There are over 350 miles of ski runs to choose from as well as some outstanding off-piste skiing. The chalet can organise hand-picked instructors whose detailed knowledge of the mountains includes knowing the best time to ski a certain piste so that you are in sunshine all day (weather permitting, of course). Hotel Kilmandjaro’s ski shop can provide all the equipment you need and can coordinate in-chalet fittings. The region also offers a wide range of alternative Alpine sports and your host can arrange heli-skiing, parapenting and even bobsleighing.
After a busy day mingling with all that Prada on the pistes, you may wish to unwind in Chalet Les Sorbiers’ hot tub. Alternatively, Hotel Kilimandjaro’s pool and spa are at your disposal and in-chalet massage and beauty treatments can be booked. For a further dose of Courchevel’s style and swagger, a chauffeur is on hand to take you anywhere in the valley. Fabulous Michelin-starred restaurants and chic nightclubs guarantee the best après-ski scene in the Alps.
