Mesmear
- Style
- Eco-friendly farm
- Setting
- North Cornish coast
Three-day breaks in the Mill have been reduced to £1,900; week from £3,500.
This stretch of north Cornwall is nature in the raw – a wild coastline of bright sunshine, crashing surf and rugged cliffs. When Alan and Tessa Rose bought these 18th-century barns made from Cornish slate and stone, there wasn’t even running water or electricity. By ingeniously harnessing the elements they had, they created two eco-friendly houses that are still uncompromisingly luxurious. Even the heated swimming-pool is solar powered. With chic interiors of soft colours and natural materials, Mesmear is perfect for family holidays and relaxing rural retreats.
'Thank you; we have had the most fun, relaxing time because at every turn you had thought through all our needs...and our children's! Great food with flexible delivery and outdoor hot showers for wetsuits were two of the many highlights. We will be back!'
'An idyllic place to stay for adults and children alike. We all had a superb time.
The children loved the gardens, outdoors and the games room'
'How special it was to have the use of the boats and Jackie to help us learn to sail and drive us around in the speedboat'

Minimum hire
Weekly hire during school holidays, Christmas and Easter. Short breaks are available at other times of the year.
Also
Smoking is not permitted inside the houses, and pets are not allowed. All the sculptures and paintings are by local artists and some of the art is for sale, so it’s worth asking if you spot something you really like.
Eating & drinking
In the Mill: If you are renting this luxury lodge or two properties together, Colin the chef will prepare breakfast, a home-made cake for afternoon tea and a three-course evening meal. A selection of wine is included with dinner. Home-made children's suppers can also be prepared and served separately. You can fit 10 adults around the dining table. Most of the beef and lamb is reared on Mesmear farm itself. If you rent the Barn or Calf's House they are self-catering, however Colin, the chef can prepare homemade food on request that is delivered to your door. There is an honesty bar with beer, wine and spirits in all the houses on the farm.
Weddings
Mesmear has been booked for a group honeymoon (strange, but true) and has hosted a number of hen parties (but not suitable for stags – sorry, chaps); although not licensed for weddings, they would be delighted to host a wedding reception.
Children
The Mill has a children’s room with plenty of toys and games. There are no stair gates but the garden is safe and enclosed. Highchairs and cots are available on request. Walkie-talkies are also provided. Children’s menus can be arranged in advance.
Music
There are iPod docking stations, and you can play CDs on the DVD players in the sitting rooms.
Provided
Bed linen, towels, bathrobes, toiletries, bath salts, beach towels, hairdryers, buckets and spades. There’s a DVD library, phones and Internet connections in the sitting rooms.
Packing tips
You can hire wet suits and water sports gear in Polzeath, but if you bring your own there’s a separate drying room at Mesmear.
Eco policy
Mesmear is a great eco option; there's a geothermal heating system although solar panels proved problematic and are gone. Low-energy light bulbs and recycling bins reduce the environmental impact even further.

The north Cornish coast offers sheltered coves, wide sandy surf beaches and rugged headlands – the perfect ingredients for a family holiday.
Activities
Best picnic spot
The orchard at Mesmear is great but if you want to work up an appetite, head to the cliff top on the Rumps walk near Polzeath.
Best beaches
Polzeath is a wide sandy beach, very popular with surfers. Daymer is ideal for families, with a gentle shelf for paddling and plenty of rock pools to explore; if it’s windy, this is the place for kiteboarding and windsurfing. Rock beach has a maze of sand dunes, in which you can play hide and seek. Lundy Bay and Epphaven are harder to reach via the coastal path. The small sandy beach is only exposed at low tide but these coves are less crowded and there are several caves to investigate, too.
Best walks
The walk between Daymer Bay and Rock, either along the beach or over the dunes, is very enjoyable. There’s a great walk from Mesmear to Lundy Bay which takes a little over an hour, but the prime views are on the Rumps beyond Lundy Bay car park. An Ordnance Survey map is provided in the Mill.
Activities
You can go mackerel fishing aboard Topaz in Rock (+44 (0)1208 863 556) and grill your catch on the barbecue back at Mesmear. Roserrow Country Club has a wide range of activities including golf, tennis and swimming (www.roserrow.co.uk). Polzeath is one of North Cornwall’s most renowned surfing beaches; you can get started at Surf’s Up Surf School in Polzeath (+44 (0)1208 862 003; www.surfsupsurfschool.com). There’s also water-skiing on the estuary at the Camel Ski School on the jetty in Rock. (www.camelskischool.co.uk). Go-karting for all ages is available at the St Eval track, about 30-minutes' drive from Mesmear (www.cornwallkarting.co.uk).
Smith tip
Mesmear proves that luxury can be environmentally friendly; we were fascinated by the ground source heat pump (no, really!). A network of pipes buried in a neighbouring field is heated by the surrounding soil and the heat is slowly accumulated by a pump. This system is enough to keep the houses nice and warm and even produce hot water. OK, enough of the science lesson… but we think it’s brilliant.

Directions by road It’s a long drive to Cornwall, and during the summer the roads can get very congested, so allow plenty of time. Take the M5 to Exeter and then the A30 to Launceston; follow the A395 and A39 south towards Wadebridge before turning north towards St Minver and Polzeath. Mesmear is one mile north east of Polzeath on the coastal road.
The Mill and Barn interiors are chic, contemporary and decked out in warm colours and natural materials. The atmosphere is relaxed and homely, but the high standards and meticulous attention to detail make for something extra special
Review
Environmentally friendly living is rarely this stylish. Mesmear, on the rugged north coast of Cornwall, doesn’t so much resist the elements as embrace them. The summer sun that warms the soft sandy beaches near Polzeath also heats the swimming pool. A network of pipes buried in the beautiful surrounding farmland provides the hot water, and there’s even talk of installing a windmill to harness the winds that hurl the surf against the nearby sea cliffs. Yet when it comes to comforts, Mesmear most definitely feels like the high life rather than The Good Life.
The four-bedroom Mill is the larger of the two buildings and is ideal for families, with a children’s room that sleep up to four. The open-plan double-height kitchen gives this house a bright and airy feel, while the more intimate two-bedroom Barn is snug and cosy – perfect in winter. The properties can be rented separately and have fully equipped kitchens, but if you rent them both all guests can fit around the dining table at the Mill and enjoy the meals prepared by Lucy the cook. This is the ideal option in summer since other facilities, such as the pool, are shared. Baby-listeners are provided, and guests can phone each other between houses for free of charge.
The Mill and Barn interiors are chic and contemporary, decked out in warm colours and natural materials. The atmosphere is relaxed and homely and the high standards and meticulous attention to detail make for something extra special. Even the sculptures and paintings which decorate the houses are by local artists. These works of art often depict the beautiful coast – they might just tempt you out of these luxurious surroundings. When you return, both houses have stylish wood-burning stoves that you can curl up in front of after a day out in the fresh cliff-top air.
Children are particularly well catered for at Mesmear and there’s a games room with table tennis, air-hockey, table football and TV that will keep them busy for hours, especially when the weather isn’t great. During the long, warm summer months there’s the heated swimming pool surrounded with sunloungers, which is available between Easter and October, and is shared with the Rose family. The Mill and the Barn also have small enclosed patios with barbecues, and the houses share a larger area of surrounding lawn and garden, too.
Only a short distance from Mesmear is some of the most spectacular coastline in the British Isles, including the wide sandy, surfing beach at Polzeath and the more sheltered Camel estuary to the south. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, as well as Lucy’s fantastic organic cooking, the local villages have some excellent seafood restaurants, including Jamie Oliver Fifteen in Watergate Bay and several Rick Stein eateries in Padstow (or should that be Padstein?). Clearly offering everything you need for the perfect Cornwall escape, all you have to do is enjoy yourselves.
