San Jordi, Ibiza

Villa Roca

Ibiza, Balearic Islands, Spain [view map]

Style
Rock-carved, rock star villa
Setting
Oozing sunset views, clinging to a cliff

Just a handful of sand’s throw from Ibiza’s golden beaches, this modernist cliff-carved celeb (and royals’) hideaway is about as paparazzi-glam as it gets in Ibiza. Sun-streamed from dusk till dawn, this neighbourless, cubist, rock star villa among the pine trees has an enormous pool with underwater windows, a bar, a staff of 10 – including two butlers and a Michelin-starred chef – and a sprawling rooftop terrace complete with Jacuzzi. Sociable yet secluded, the result is a combination of glamorous party house and shut-the-world-out private escape. A complimentary luxury concierge service is offered throughout your stay, so the only finger you’ll need to lift is the one requesting another sunset martini.

Villa Roca

Ibiza, Balearic Islands, Spain

Best picnic spot

We defy you to leave the A-list confines of Villa Roca. Why not ask the chef to prepare you some top-deck delicacies to enjoy before the sunset?

Best beaches

Nearby Sa Caletta is a little red-cliffed cove, while Es Cavallet nudist beach is a beautiful sandy stretch with views to Formentera (take a left turn off the road that leads to Salinas – just after you pass the salt dunes). Salinas beach is also near the villa and is a hotspot for the gorgeous people. It has a handy sun lounger service but – be warned – this beach gets very busy in high season. North-coast Cala d’en Serra, near Portinatx, is a well-kept secret. Aguas Blancas on the northeast coast has a great chiringuito serving caipirinhas and steak sandwiches. Nearby Cala Jondal in the east is beloved for its seafood restaurants.

Activities

Hire a 4x4 and take to the dirt tracks that criss-cross the pine forests in the north of the island. There’s limitless opportunity for golf, sailing, water-skiing, windsurfing, diving, horse-riding, go-karting and hot-air balloon trips, too. Speak to Deliciously Sorted to arrange.

Smith tip

Roca rooftop etiquette: start your evening with a chilled glass of champagne at sunset in the Jacuzzi, as the barbecue sizzles in the background… before falling back on plump Bedouin tent cushions and psyching yourself up for your feast.

Getting there

Planes Iberia, British Airways and EasyJet all fly into Ibiza airport, which is about five miles southwest of Ibiza Town. Direct flights take a little over two hours from the UK. (There are no direct flights from the UK during November to March.) If you’re not hiring a car, taxis from the rank outside the airport are metred and reasonable (around €10 for the trip to Ibiza Town).

Local taxi service Taxi San Joan (+34 971 333033), WBW private driving service (+34 696 253759). For car hire, click on our Travel Offers page. Smithcard holders get a 10 per cent discount with Hertz.

Directions by road Forget map-reading nightmares – one of the Villa Roca’s butlers will pick you up from the airport. But, in case you get lost one balmy evening after dinner in Ibiza Town, here are directions for your records… Immediately on leaving the airport there is a right-hand turn to San Jose next to an old windmill. This is a funny junction and you need to turn right then approach the junction facing the main road. Cross the main road and head for San Jose. Follow the road for approximately 2km until you hit the next roundabout that leads on to the main road from Ibiza to San Jose. Turn right towards Ibiza Town and join the main road. After about 100m, take the next left on the other side of the main road. Follow the bendy tarmac road for about 1km until you see some large green rubbish bins on your right. After 20m the road splits: take the right-hand fork. Follow the lane for approximately 200m until you see a turning to the right. Follow this track for about 1km, and you will see Villa Roca at the top of the hill.

Villa Roca

Ibiza, Balearic Islands, Spain

Wake up to the clinking sound of a cocktail being mixed by the pool, then jump into the rooftop’s sunken chill-out zone – you won’t be moving until the light of the golden sunset pours over you

Walking into Villa Roca is like stepping onto a film set. The cliff-carved house is  headswimmingly glamorous; modernist grandeur and a melange of cubist-style, floor-to-ceiling glass and exposed cliff face beckons you in. Minimalist yet  comfortable this extra-special vacation rental is a labyrinthine, cavernous masterpiece that is also bright, light and ethereal. Oozing star quality, it’s hard to resist cajoling the house staff into revealing which celebrities and royals have stayed here. Ask away, but they won’t tell. Discretion is the name of the game at Villa Roca.

You wind your way up a rocky road to reach this party-perfect house in the sky – a lung-refreshingly 200m above sea level. Here, a barbecue sizzles on the rooftop terrace and awaits your arrival, while an enormous pool begs you to slip under its sun-warmed water. Up-lit, fountain-kissed cliff face leads you inside, and exposed rock walls make subtle appearances throughout the rest of the house; a cave dressing room here, a tree poking through a terrace floor there… Built around the stone of the cliff, this is a dramatic natural invasion of a pristine, rock-star space.

Lolling in one of five hammocks that overlook Salinas, Playa d’en Bossa and beyond to the island of Formentera, you find it’s easy to imagine being alone on this island. Yet as peaceful, still and full of silence as it is, high up here in the clouds, you’re still just 10 minutes from the cosmopolitan hub of Ibiza Town – and only a handy 10 minutes from the airport.

Like an optical illusion, floating white-cube staircases lead you all over Villa Roca: across cool Brazilian stone floors, through a maze of bedrooms with in-room sunken baths, past open fires and into red-lit, chill-out rooms. No inch of cliff face has been left unturned to create this palatial rock ’n’ roll retreat. The master bedroom isn’t just a bedroom, it’s a Jo Malone-packed, Jacuzzi-filled piece of art, overlooking the sparkling lights of Ibiza.

This sole intention of this villa, with its evanescent team of 10 staff (including a barman, two butlers and a chef), is to pamper you. Whether you sink into the rooftop Jacuzzi, the burgundy cushions in the Bedouin tent or the cream sofa under the stretched plasma screen, there are so many different rooms, levels and terraces that you’ll never want to leave. Wake up to the clinking sound of a cocktail being mixed down by the pool, pick out your day’s meals from the chef’s menu, then go and jump into the rooftop’s sunken chill-out zone – you won’t be moving until the light of the golden sunset pours over you. Fit-for-a-superstar chic? Tick. Heartstoppingly-stunning views? Check. The ultimate rock-star Ibiza villa? Oh yes.
