In the know

Our favourite rooms
Quite why the man in question would need one when he lives barely a block away is unclear, but the Presidential Suite, which is the size of a house and swaddled in luxury, is certainly worthy of the name. If you don’t have $10,000 to fling around, we’d suggest opting for one of the eight sienna-hued Metropolitan Suites – spacious, luxurious, and ideal for families as they adjoin the Superior Double rooms.
Packing tips
Bring all your favourite political-thriller DVDs – All the Presidents Men. The West Wing, etc – you're practically staying on the set.
Also
The St Regis’ cyber-savvy butlers are all equipped with BlackBerrys so you can email requests when you’re out and about in DC.

Food & drink

Washington DC hotels: St Regis Washington DC, food and drink
Hotel restaurant
Michelin-adored megachef Alain Ducasse adds another feather to his culinary cap with Adour, which pairs seasonal French and American cuisine with an impeccable wine list, in a smart environment of black, white and silver tones.
Dress code
Sharp Savile Row suits for him, high-glam haute couture for her.
Top table
Snaffle a window seat and watch Washingtonian life walk by, or, if there’s a few of you, ask for the semi-private dining room at the back of the restaurant.
Last orders
Dinner’s served until 10pm during the week, 10.30pm on Friday and Saturday, and not at all on Sunday and Monday. Lunch is available Monday to Friday until 2pm.
Room service
Private dining can be arranged around the clock.
Hotel bar
A clubby wood-pannelled corner of Ardour, St Regis’ bar is the kind of place you can imagine sharp-suited politicos exchanging briefcases full of cash. The hotel’s famous Bloody Marys are poured until well past midnight.

Local restaurants

If you can bring yourself to venture beyond Alain Ducasse’s gorgeous Adour, you’ll find dozens of delicious eateries just a short walk form the St Regis. Chiselled über-chef Todd English has a branch of his much-admired Italian chain, Olives, very close by on K Street (+1 202 452 1866). Twigs (+1 202 737 1333) in the Capital Hilton hotel is a casual American eatery that often attracts the city’s political elite for an informal nibble. Georgia Browns (+1 202) 393 4499) on 15th Street serves classic Southern dishes, frequently with a live jazz soundtrack. The Hay-Adam’s Hotel’s Lafayette restaurant (+1 202 638 2570) offers exceptional formal fine dining, overlooking the White House.

Worth getting out of bed for

With the White House practically across the road, a significant proportion of the US‘s most famous statuary down the street and the Smithsonian’s 19 museums within meandering distance, you could spend days in the same square mile.
