Our favourite rooms

Cooper Square’s rooms are categorised numerically from 1–5, with more bells and whistles added the higher up you go. The Cooper 3s are invigoratingly light and airy, thanks to the almost floor-to-ceiling windows – try to get a west-facing room as these have unobstructed views of the surrounding rooftops. We like the Cooper Suites too – not just for the extra living space, but because of the cheeky vintage copies of Playboy left on the beds for your retro delectation. If you’ve $7,500 to spare, there’s nowhere else to book but the Penthouse, with its huge wraparound terrace that looks out over the whole city.

Packing tips

Leave the library at home, Cooper Square has more than 4,000 secondhand volumes dotted around the lobby, library and rooms, covering everything from fashion to erotica. These are all available to buy – with all proceeds going to the homeless charity

Have a peek in your minibar – in addition to the usual spirits and mixers you’ll find quirky treats such as custom-made jewellery by Tina Thor, make-up kits, and health packs from fitness guru David Kirsch.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant

Govind Armstrong’s Table 8 makes use of local ingredients (a tall order in New York) to produce a fine American menu with a bias towards steak and seafood. The dining room itself is an immaculate open space with white oak floors and a salt bar for snacking on dried meats, fish and counter snacks.

Although Table 8’s fully open dining, the hotel’s riddled with private nooks where you can retreat privately but still get full service.

Last orders

The bar’s cocktail-shakers remain aquiver until after midnight.

Hotel bar

Cooper Square’s ground floor bar is open to guests and public punters alike. The sloping ceiling is sparklingly clad in black subway tile, and the floors are fashioned from Italian Slate. The sexy second-floor bar and patio overlooking the gardens is slated to open in May.
