In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- The Studio Loft room 1018 has a wood-burning fireplace at the foot of the bed and is laid out to maximise the sense of space– the Standard rooms are on the small side. The Alcove Suite has a huge soaking tub set within a sparkly-tiled nook – it’s like bathing inside a disco ball. If you can, book a room above the eighth floor to minimise Midtown street noise. If you’re lucky enough to spend a night in the three Penthouses, you’ll have a lavish private roof terrace where you can lord it over the Manhattan skyline.
- Packing tips
- Opera glasses for scrutinising the stages of nearby Broadway, and an iPod stuffed with showtunes to bring the showbiz soundtrack back to your boudoir.
- Also
- As well as an impressive selection of snacks and drinks, Royalton’s rather eccentric minibars include intimacy kits, hangover cures, Korres products, and saucily sloganned T-shirts.
Food & drink
- Hotel restaurant
- Nautically inspired in both decor and dishes, Brasserie 4 is a warm, woody space hung with nets and lined camel leather booths. The Modern America menu leans heavily on fresh fish and seafood, but chef Scott Ekstrom also works wonders with classic New York steaks. There’s a pre-theatre menu for early diners.
- Dress code
- After-party chic – louche and loungey.
- Top table
- The brasserie’s banquette booths all afford privacy, so hunker down in one of these. For snacky bar food or drinks, Royalton’s packed with moodily lit nooks, alcoves and cubbyholes to lose entire evenings in.
- Last orders
- Breakfast is available from 7am to 10am; lunch, midday to 3pm; dinner from 5pm to 10pm. Liquor flows until the early hours.
- Room service
- Full meals and lighter bites can be brought to your room between 7am and midnight.
- Hotel bar
- Bar 44 is a dark and alluring affair, with rich chocolate tones and chunky brass and iron fixtures softened by suedes and weathered leathers. Cocktail waiters gambol in and out of darkened doorways, delivering food and drink to city bigwigs and incognito c’lebs.

Local restaurants
Just steps across the street from Royalton, DB Bistro Moderne (+1 212 391 2400) is a contemporary Parisian-style bistro both celebrated and ridiculed for its $150 burger. Another good (but more economical) French option is Rue 57 (+1 212 3075656) on West 57th Street, which is perfect for a Bloody-Mary-enhanced bustling brunch. For old-school New York glamour with added jazz, nothing beats the Oak Room at The Algonquin across the street (+1 212 840 6800), which has live shows Sunday to Thursday – reservations essential.
Worth getting out of bed for
Broadway! Not only are the lights much brighter here, but you’re also only a block away from the thick of the theatre. Check out www.broadway.com for tickets and show times. Radio City (www.radiocity.com) is four blocks north of Royalton and plays host to big-name musicians throughout the year. For a break from the showbiz, head to the shops – the luxury boutiques of Fifth Avenue are enticingly close. Highlights are fashion palace Bergdorf Goodman (www.bergdorfgoodman.com), with its top-floor restaurant overlooking Central Park, and toy emporium FAO Schwartz (www.fao.com), which is enough to bring out the inner child in anyone…
